The Month of May . . . Bur-
gess Meredith epitomized it in
a spectacular Monday night, but
no network can grasp the spirit
of May, not in the way that al-
jmost every family does in, our
little community and throughout
East Texas.
Many make a business of ber-
rying, some go berrying for the
feel of May. That’s what our
(family did. We took our fav-
orite route, Highway 309, turn-
ed off by Alligator Cemetery and
the moment the car passes this
landmark, the country is ours
to go any one of the twisting
little roads, to see any num-
ber of wonders.
Great oaks spread their aged
arms, pastures of clover drowse
in the sun, grapevines over-hang
the path you chose, and best
of all, ditches are filled with an
JEast Texans delight—lush, pur-
ple dewberries, which the birds
and insects are busily destroy-
ing.
Fingers and faces immediately
obtain a purple hue, chiggers
greet the pickers lustily, some-
one always gets pricked through-
ly and barefeet inevitably meet
up with burrs. Little girls stop
their berrying at the sight of
wild buttercups, larkspurs, pinks
and lavendars that bloom on
every hand.
There is one spot in this por-
tion of the country which has,
through the years thrilled me.
We always stop on the brow of
this hill and look over the
Chambers Creek bottom lands.
The heavy foliage blots out all
man-made things, the swaying
tops of trees lends a fairy-like
quality to this expanse of val-
leys ... a vision of loveliness
held but a moment, then the
dip down as our adventuresome
hearts send us exploring each
passable cow track. '
What indeed is so delightful
as a day in, May?
