On Tuesday evening, May
12, what can well be called
the crowning event of the col-
ored school year took place.
Eighteen hoys and girls made
their last appearance as stu-
dents of the colored school.
The occasion was the gradu-
ating exercises held at the C.
M. E. church. The address to
the class was made by Dr.
Wm. R. Strassner of Bishop
College, Marshall, Texas.
Dr. Strassner used for his
subject, “Facing Life.” He
pointed out gome of the diffi-
culties one was sure to meet
in this business of living.
Among some were social,
racial and economic. He warn-
ed the class against becoming
disillusioned about life. “Life
is not a bed of rosed but rather
a battle to be fought,” said
the speaker. Find yourselves,
adjust yourselves, and main-
tain your ideals are a few of
the suggestions given to fol-
low in facing life’s situations.
The speaker gave his hear-
ers these assurances: That one
day the war will be over; that
we wlil have a new world;
that there will be a chance for
all, and that life, liberty and
the persuit of happiness will
be a reality and not just an
ideal. And, finally the mem-
bers of the class were urged
to fortify themselves with self-
confidence, industry, determi-
nation, and integrity of char-
acter. Armed with these and
with the inspirations of the
past, the opportunities of the
present, and a hope for the
future, the class was admon-
ished to face life as did Booke.-
T. Washington, Abraham Lin-
coln, and George Washington
Carver, who succeeded despite
their handicaps.
Diplomas were presented to
: the class by Mr. F. 8. Bussey,
i president of school board.
