ABOUT THE BUTTER SITUATION
> \
T\-
College Station.—An aver-
age American ale IS pounds
6f butter last year, but he will
be lucky to get 13 pounds dur-
ing 194c. Louise Bryant, home
management specialist for the
A. and M. College Extension
Service said in a radio broad-
cast this week.
In areas where the popula-
tion has increased consider-
ably because of war indus-
tries. consumers rar' expect
even less than pounds, un-
less rotter means of distribu-
tion are worked out or butter
is rationed, the specialist spec-
ulated. She explained Secre-
tary Wickard's recent order
providing that 30 per cent of
the nation’s butter supply is
- to be reserved for military
and lend-Iease use. This does
not apply to farm families
who mate hatter f, home or
to small creameries. It affects
creameries which produce
more than 12,000 pounds of
butter in any one month since
January of last year.
Of the 30 per cent of U. S.
butter supplies reserved, two
thirds will go to U. S. fighting
forces, one third to U. S. pos-
sessions, the United Nations,
and to the Red Cross.
Miss Bryant explained that
lend-Iease exports of butter
last year were less than one
per cent of the nation’s total
supply. but that shipments
will be considerably larger
duripg 1943. To date. Great
Britain has received no butter,
and most of the shipments are
sent to Russia for use by the
fighting forces, she said.
“If every person in the
United States would eat just
one pnond of butter less than
usual in 1943, the supply sav-
ed would be more than the
amount we plan to send to
Russia. I don't know any
Texan who wouldn't be will-
ing to share his butter with 1942 period,
the defenders of Stalingrad,” j
she said. The Russians Put iMTIfCWUHT PUT
