INSURANCE TAKES GUESS
OUT OF FARMING
College Station.—The gaem
•has been taken out of cotton
fanning this year, according
to Frank B. Seale, state AAA
committeeman and Robertson
county cotton fanner.
"Heretofore, we’re planted
cotton and hoped to see it
through to harvest, but with
insurance it'll be a different
story this year,” Seale said in
pointing out that Federal Crop
Insurance protects the poten-
' tucl crop against insect infes-
tation, flood, drouth, storms
and ail other unavoidable
hazards.
Insurance does not mean
that fanners can plant cotton,
let the grass and weeds take
it, and sit back and wait to
collect, the committeeman
said, since insurance does not
protect crops against losses
caused from poor fanning
practices or use ot inferior
seeds.
landlords, tenants and
sharecroppers having an in-
terest in a 1942 cotton crop
may insure either 50 or 75 per
cent of their average produc-
tion. Each interest may be in-
sured independently of the
other, the committeeman said.
Amounts of premiums will
vary since they are based on
actual risks of growing cotton
on individual farms.
"Insurance is money in the
pocket whether a boll » pick-
ed or not. It’s just another
method Texas farmers are
using to get their financial
house in good shape,” the
AAA official said.
Premiums for insurance are
due at approximate ginning
time and may be paid for in
cash, cash equivalent, loss
payments, if any are made,
cotton loans, if available, or
from AAA cheeks.
"Farmers who need cash to
start cotton crops can use j

their insurance contracts as

cent of normal production is
already on the dotted line,”
Seale said.

"THE HOME OF FRIENDLY SERVICE”
RHONE1U
College Station.—Recent in-
creases in home accident
deaths prompt Mrs. Bernice
Claytor, Extension Service spe-
cialist in home improvement,
to urge more accident preven-
tion work in wartime. At a
time when every citizen must
contribute his maximum to the
nation’s victory effort, some
accidents slow down produc-
tion, rob the nation of essen-
tia! manpower, and are costly
in money and morale, she
says.
Remedies for home acci-
dents are more difficult to ef-
fect than remedies for indus-
trial accidents, since there is
no' direct control over family
life. Mrs. Claytor says that
means the responsibility for
accident prevention lies with
every family. She says home-
makers can make their homes
safter by doing these things:
Use care in waxing floors
and placing rugs.
Install handrails or other
simple safety devices over
bathtubs.
Light stairways.
Keep matches and poison
out of the reach of children.
Dispose of can-openers
which are dull or broken.
Keep knives and other
pointed instruments in their'
proper place and teach chil-
dren to avoid them or to use
them carefully.
See that clothing and cur-
tains are hung where they
cannot be ignited by an open
flame.
Keep a short stepladder
handy, and avoid standing on
chairs.
Promptly wipe up grease or
water spilled on the floor.
Don’t allow kettles to boil
over, for water will extinguish
a gas burner. If you notice a
gas leak, extinguish all flames,
ventilate the room, and call
your gas company.
"The biggest help is to take
your time,” the specialist says,
"Hurrying results in many ac-
cidents.”
Records made at cotton-ln-.
sect laboratories of the U. &
Department of Agriculture in-
dicate that more boll weevils
emerged from hibernation last
spring than during any recent
year.
