To give your readers an idea of the pro-

facts. One of i.v Deighbore raised one

raised 1" bushels per ...-re. The hedge row

that the American Aloe or an it is known
among us the Vw.it I 'hint is found in
somo of the conservatories at the North
and is regarded there as quite a ourioaity.
We read of one specimen in possession of
Mr. (leorge H. Stuart of Philadelphia
which is expected soon to ho in bloom. It
weighs .'101 If) pounds. Thousands arc ex-
pected to visit the grounds in order to get
a sight at this rare floral curiosity. In the
Western portion of our St-ito and in Mox-
ico this plant is found of indigenous growth.
I'Voni few of its varieties the V..i is
made whieh constitutes the common drink
in Northern Moxioo; this beiog distilled
makes Mumnl. From its leaf or blade they
draw the fibres whieh serve as thread ; and
is also on urtiolo of oouuncrce. This plant
it would seem was almost indispensable to
tha existence of the poorer Mexicans. From
it tiny make fence- or hedges iuvulnerable

There are many other purposes to which
the people of Mexico apply the Maguey. The
writer of pamphlet upon Moxioo enume-
rates smm seventy-two uses to which this
plant is applied. In addition to tha above
it possesses virtues us a medicine. Dr. Per-
rin of the I'. S. army experimented with it
as a remedy in -curvy aud found it infi-
nitely superior to those previously adminis-
tered. !n tho .Maguey districts of Mexico
the scurvy is hardly known. Puhut is a
stomachic of the first class. The Magmy
grows wild botweeu the Nueces and the
Wo Grande. Much of the land in that
region hitherto supposed to be useless ex-
cept for grilling will souie day be appro-
priated to the culture of this plant and in
time there is no doubt but that it will con-
stitute one of the staple productions of
Western Texas and an important article of
commerce. It is very hardy and will grow
iu sterile legions where there is little mois-
ture and wh re the changes of temperature
are considerable bearing alike the dryness
of the plains between the Nueces and the
ltio lirande and the snows of the elevated
tablelands of Mexico without damage.
lt.wN IN Tkxas. An opinion prevails
to a considerable extent that it seldom
rain" in Western Texas. This is not 'rue.
The seasons during the present year were
very fine and nothing save the advent of
the locusts prevented our farmers from
growing exceedingly heavy trope. The
fact of their not having done so will no
doubt be attributed to the dryness of the
latter portion of the summer which is not
the cause for the reason that under ordi
nary circumstances the crops would have
been made before the dry teini set in A
gentleman has addressed communications
to the New Orleans Crescent upon Texas.
The annexed is an extract from one of
them :

tieu'ar is verv injurious to a new country-
It greatly retards its progress by preventing
the inflowing of intelligent agriculturists.
One or two .-easons of failure in crops from
this cnue is sufficient to destroy its repu-
tation as an agricultural country. Those
who suffer in consequence of such failure
arc too often inclined to exaggerate their
losses aud to speak disparugiugly of the
country. Overlooking entirely tha manv
losses which they have seen experienced iu
other sections in consequence of too much
or too little ruin or ot frost rust weavel
Ac they continue their tirade against the
land in which they reside until the ensuing
en p by its magnitude aud value oblite-
rates the value of the past. Iu this way
an army of croakers arise whose object
teem! to be to exaggerate every existing
evil and by the time their croakiugs ri.a-.-h
lb-- cars of the citizens of the adjoining
State! they present a fulfilled picture which
i is truly uppaltng. ftucli has beeu the un-
fortnnata experience of Texas during the
i past two year.-. In 1m;'iG there was a par
tial limine oi inc crops 10r want or run;
in IsoT tho failure in this section from the
same cause was total. The losses thus oc
casioned gave rise to the state of things
above described aud In eousequeuce. the
general iuij ifMHOO uw abroad is that
Wc-tcrn Texas is a dry ..Usiile region and
totally unfit for njricultura! pursuit. To
disprove this it is oulv ueueasary to look

the idon thai Westoru Texas is as well sup-

but I do wish to impress the reader with
the fact that notwithstanding a compara-

A correspondent of the N. O Ptetlgune
gives a graphic account of affairs in 1 tali
The Mormons were returning from I'rovo
to Salt Luke city early iu Ju!y He say!!
The scenes among the retumim. refugees
upon the road confirm ill you have already
heurd of the extreme poverty of many of
the people Any Dumber of females old
and younc are seen passing along bare
foot with scarcely enough clothing upon
them to oovor their persons and the fen-
rags they have of the ooaraesl material.
Many are entirely without even a calico
gown wearing eoar-e petticoat some-
times made of a scant pattern of old carpet
or a worn out coverlet and n calico or
muslin waist which their best efforts c .m
not coax up to the nquiretnonti ol modesty
An army officer who was in town the other
dny on his return to camp passed over a
road on the west side of the .Jordan which
is less frequented than the direct road
fiom Provo on this side ; suddenly lie came
upon a company of a do. en or more females
walking along the mod on their r turn from
PfOVO in company with two or throe male
"protectors wh i were mounted loma-
