In neighborhood! that have been blessed

that the American Aloe or an it is known
among us the Vw.it I 'hint is found in
somo of the conservatories at the North
and is regarded there as quite a ourioaity.
We read of one specimen in possession of
Mr. (leorge H. Stuart of Philadelphia
which is expected soon to ho in bloom. It
weighs .'101 If) pounds. Thousands arc ex-
pected to visit the grounds in order to get
a sight at this rare floral curiosity. In the
Western portion of our St-ito and in Mox-
ico this plant is found of indigenous growth.
I'Voni few of its varieties the V..i is
made whieh constitutes the common drink
in Northern Moxioo; this beiog distilled
makes Mumnl. From its leaf or blade they
draw the fibres whieh serve as thread ; and
is also on urtiolo of oouuncrce. This plant
it would seem was almost indispensable to
tha existence of the poorer Mexicans. From

There are many other purposes to which
the people of Mexico apply the Maguey. The
writer of pamphlet upon Moxioo enume-
rates smm seventy-two uses to which this
plant is applied. In addition to tha above
it possesses virtues us a medicine. Dr. Per-
rin of the I'. S. army experimented with it
as a remedy in -curvy aud found it infi-
nitely superior to those previously adminis-
tered. !n tho .Maguey districts of Mexico
the scurvy is hardly known. Puhut is a
stomachic of the first class. The Magmy
grows wild botweeu the Nueces and the
Wo Grande. Much of the land in that
region hitherto supposed to be useless ex-
cept for grilling will souie day be appro-
priated to the culture of this plant and in
time there is no doubt but that it will con-
stitute one of the staple productions of
Western Texas and an important article of
commerce. It is very hardy and will grow
iu sterile legions where there is little mois-
ture and wh re the changes of temperature
are considerable bearing alike the dryness
of the plains between the Nueces and the
ltio lirande and the snows of the elevated
tablelands of Mexico without damage.

to a considerable extent that it seldom
rain" in Western Texas. This is not 'rue.
The seasons during the present year were
very fine and nothing save the advent of
the locusts prevented our farmers from
growing exceedingly heavy trope. The
fact of their not having done so will no
doubt be attributed to the dryness of the
latter portion of the summer which is not
the cause for the reason that under ordi
nary circumstances the crops would have
been made before the dry teini set in A
gentleman has addressed communications
to the New Orleans Crescent upon Texas.
The annexed is an extract from one of
them :
"To the agriculturist there is probably
no feature of the climatology of a country

of salt dissolved in water to ever hundred

the shuck with the corn.
