Animal Health Situation
In Shelby County
Gets Major Attention
(By Cecil Wharton, Vocational
Agriculture Teacher)
The animal health situation
in Shelby county and Texas is
getting major attention. The
serewworm, a pest causing an
estimated annual loss of one
hundred million dollars, la a
primary target.
In a recent meeting initiated
by County Agent Joe Ander-
son, and Vocational Agricul-
ture teachers: Cecil Wharton,
H. H. Lewis, Arnold Hooper
and Earl Hagler, and attended
by a group of livestock produc-
ers and others concerned with
animal health decided to or-
ganize and support a state-
wide effort
Howard Parker and Joe
Fleming were elected to co-
chairman. and Cecil Masaey,
secretary-treasurer. Other
member* of the county com-
mittee include dbe Ellis, Lovis

The group will support the
recently formed Scutbwest Ani-
mal Health Research founda-
tion in its drive to do something
about the animal health situa-
tion. Its purposes are to receive
and disburse funds, and spon-
sor research aad educational
programs on animal health-in-
cluding diseases, insects aad
parasitica—to the end that
these hazards of livestock pro-
duction assy eventually be con-
trolled.
“Animal health," Chairman
Parker said, “is not only a con-
cern of the producer but the
economic loss also effects busi-
ness and consumers. We all
have a lot at stake Is this pro-
gram.”
The Foundation’* first major
effort will be a program aimed
at controlling the screw worm.
“Through county organisa-
tions such as ours, every live-
stock producer and other inter-
ested person* will have an op-
portunity to support the Foun-
dation and its program. Pro-
ducers are being naked to con-
tribute on the basis of 60 cants
per head for adult cows, hones
and steers, and Id cents per
head for sheep, goats, swine
and deer," Mr. Parker said.
Contributions may be made
to any member of the commit-
tee. Ail monies collected will
be passed on to the Foundation
for support of existing re-
search facilities and conduct of
large scale field testa.
Chairman Parker said, “We
know this first program wifi
cost several million dollars,
but if we can remove the serow-
worm from the scene, the an-
nual savings will amount to
several times the cost of the
control effort.”
