School Renovation
Almost Complete
By BONNIE PKUSKY
"We're about through with what wc can do" Superin-
tendent Wcldon Bowman said concerning renovation of
ceilings and lighting fixtures in the high school building at
last week's Holland School Trustees meeting. The group met
in the high school library at 7:00 p.m.
Bowman said as soon as the ceiling project Is finished he
would like to get a good reading on the tax collections and
then If money is available replace some of the doors around
the campus as the next project.
He recommended glass doors saying they gave a better
appearance and were notNinclincd to give trouble like the
metal doors do after a few years. They also provide more-
light for the hallways.
A need to correct drainage problems around the elemen-
tary school building and the gym was also discussed.
Bowman reported that the lunchroom account is over-
drawn chiefly because the school breakfast program has
been costing the school more than anticipated. In previous
years the Holland schools have had up to a $3000 surplus in
the lunchroom account.
Superintendent Bowman indicated that he had no report to
make on tax collections and had no idea what percentage of
collections the district would end up with.
He also said that Tax Collector Tolly Moore was working
up a report on "what our losses will be if the (Tax Belief)
Amendment is enacted as approved." A house committee
has already recommended that certain parts of the Amend-
ment not be implemented because it might create a hardship
on Texas schools.
On another matter the Superintendent said that the
Holland schools would begin putting more emphasis on
test scores rather than daily work as a result of a meeting
of educators in Austin on the subject of testing which
Bowman attended.
School athletics was also briefly discussed with Bowman
indicating that he wanted to try to cut down the number of
track meets to four plus the district meet in order to have less
interference with classroom work. He also reported the
ordering of 12 warm upsuits for the girls basketball team and
an additional uniform for the junior high basketball squads.
A lunchroom report indicated 3310 lunches served In-
cluding 839 free 385 reduced and 2085 regular ..A total of 953
breakfasts were served 429 regular 412 free and 122
reduced.
Bills were approved and the meeting adjourned.
Present at the meeting were: Superintendent Weldon
Bowman; Secretary Betty Stroud; Trustees Carole Starke
Boady Johnson Charles Kohring Curtis Wolf Coleman
Bcnner Terry Bertrand and Eddie Dantzlcr.

"Farm tractor and
machinery mishaps take the
lives of 800 to 1000 people
each year on our U.S. farms
and ranches" Ben Bullard
Assistant Safety Director for
the Texas Farm Bureau in
Waco said Monday at a
meeting of the Bartlett-
Holland Young Farmers
held at the Holland School
Cafctorlum beginning at 7
p.m.
According to Bullard the
Farm Bureau hopes to aid in
reducing the needless loss of
life and farming equipment
by encouraging greater
caution and the use of
protective equipment.
Bullard discussed ways in
which many Texas farm and
ranch people have been
fatally injured in past years.
They include overturns
horseplay speed extra
passengers and refueling
accidents As many as 30 to
50 people have been fatally
injured each year over the
past few years He estimates
that both the injury rate and
the fatality rate could be
reduced by 40 to 50 percent

The loop would make it possible for Bartlett residents to
