GERMANS CLAIM

Berlin, July 16. (UP)—Ger-
many’s northern army is “near
Leningrad” and has crossed
the Lnga river—last obstacle
before the big port which !B
Russian's second city—in a
plunging drive which is con-
tinuing without halt, usually
well-informed Nazi quarters

ficially reported to have reach-
ed yesterday, was said to be
imminent with all Soviet de-
fenses reported overcome.
Late reports from the north-
ern sector of the 'front, re-
ceived at Berlin military head-
quarters early today, said that
in the drive' on Leningrad
from southwest of the city
both German panzer and in-
fantry divisions were pursuing
“the retreating enemy.”
The Luga river along most
of its course is 60 to 80 miles
southwest of Leningrad.
Success of German troops at
the several places where they
broke through the Stalin line,
military quarters add, was
increased considerably by
comprehensive support being
given land fighters by the luft-
waffe.
German planes on Monday
alone were said to have de-
stroyed 23 Russian locomo-
tives, mare than 1,030 rail-
way cars and two heavy rail-
way guns.
Usually reliable Nazi quar-
ters said that German shock-
troops, on the 24th day of the
Battle of Russia, were fighting
their way into Kiev but had
“not yet captured the whole
city,” indicating that sharp
street fighting might be under-
way.
Another thing that nobody
believes is a Berlin denial.—

Nest of Eggs 25,000 Years Old
Austin, Tex.—A nest of eggs
25,000 years old has been
placed on exhibit In the Texas
Memorial Museum on the
University of Texas campus
here.
Dug up in San Patricio coun-
ty, the eggs were probably
laid by an. ancient bird re-
sembling today’s crane, Dr. E.
H. Sellards, museum director,
said. Then some sort of sand-
storm covered them up until
their recent excavation.
