HISD teachers honored
as school year ends
Hondo Independent School Dis-
tict teachers and other personnel
were honored Saturday, June 2 at
an end-of-school luncheon at
McDowell Cafeteria.
The teachers of the year at the
Meyer, McDowell and high school
campuses wete also named by the
Kiwanis Club of Hondo and each
received a standing ovation from
her peers.
Rita Vance was named recipient
of the award at the high school
campus. Marsha Andrews was the
McDowell campus winner and
Mary Jo Schweers was named the
best teacher at the Meyer campus.
"Each of the winners received
several nominations and we felt the
accomplishments listed showed
that each had outstanding qualifica-
tions for the honor," said Maurice
Webster, Kiwanis committee chair-
man, who presented the awards.
Each winner also received a U. S.
flag as a gift.
Webster also said that the Kiwa-
nis Club is looking for suggestions
from local teachers as to how the
club can better assist with local
learning programs.
"Freedom with justice and equal-
ity with justice will maximize both
freedom and equality in a good so-
ciety," he said, "but you cannot
have a good society without good
men and women. The teacher is the
last best hope we have left to help
this hedonistic society."
In an effort to help teachers help
children learn to make good
choices, he suggested that in the fu-
ture a monetary award might be
added to the Teacher of the Year
program to further six great ideas:
truth, goodness, beauty, liberty,
equality and justice.
"Can these six great ideas be
taught throughout the school sys-
tem?" he asked.
