Here it is time to get that
home orchard out. Every farm'in
Boil County can grow fruit if
proper varieties and culture are
used. Here are ton points for a
successful orchard in Bell
County.
1. Select trees from reliable
nurseries.
2. Use varieties recommended
by Texas A & M College.
3. Locate orchard on well-
drained ground as near house as
possible. '
4. Place trees 30 feet apart.
Grapes and berries as recom-
mended 5. Never allow roots to get
dry. Heel out trees and keep
moist until ready to set out. Trim
roots and tops before or at time
of planting. Plant one inch deep-
er than trees grow in nursery
rows and nodeeper.
G. Settle soil around trees
with water. Fill in hole with
topsoil.
7 Do hot fertilize the first
year and after that as recom-
mended. 8. Prune peach and plum trees
from top down keeping the fruit-
ing area as low as possible. Cut
out all rub limbs on all trees.
fl. Practice systematic spray
ing both dormant and summer.
10. Improve land by growing
legumes with phoshate and use
commercial fertilizer as recom
mended.
