new system is put into place.
The resignation of former City
Secretary Vangie Piemen tel, who
also served as tax assessor-collector,
left the city without a qualified per-
son to handle tax collection matters.
County Tax Assessor-Collector
Loraine Neuman estimates that her
office can handle the city's taxes at a
annual cost of approximately $4,800
($1.60 per pjfrcei for approximately
3,000 parcels) plus an initial cost of
$5,000 for converting computer data.
In the past the city has budgeted
approximately $29,500 for this de-
partment. City Manager Scou Wall
estimates initial savings of $20,000
and annual savings of $25,000.
The change-over will not take ef-
fect before February 1994.
Neuman’s office already collects
taxes for other cities in the county.

Have you ever heard the saying "If
it's too good to be true, then it proba-
bly is"?
Last week a lady in Hondo re-
ceived a post card from a company
that listed four prizes on the back.
She was a winner one of the prizes,
and she would also win a cash bonus
if she called the 1-800 telephone
number within 72 hours of receiving
this post card.
The lady called the 1-800 number
and the person on the other end
asked her for some identifying num-
bers that were listed on the card. He
then made a beautiful speech, and
explained the prizes available.
Then just as things were going
good he said that he needed her bank
name, checking account number and
the routing number from her check-
ing account. When questioned he
said that she would be responsible for
a $229.00 shipping and handling fee

The company representative said
that they would simply draft the
amount from her checking accounL
which would save her the trouble.
If the local lady would have given
her checking account information to
the company rep. she could have lost
everything.
She did an excel lent job and did not
give any information to the company

EGG DROP... McDowell School students waited Friday for the results
ot the final test of paper parachutes designed by Mrs. Debbie Wilson's
science class. The final parachute created a flury of excitement as it
landed in the midst of the crowd of students and teachers (it can be seen
in the top photo below the American flag an instant before it hit the
ground). Pilot Rusty Lindemann flew Mrs. Wilson across the school
grounds to drop the best of the parachutes created by the seventh
graders. In the bottom photo students hold a banner made by art
students thanking Mr. Lindemann for his assistance.
