Civil War re-enactment set
for July 4 Eagle Pass show
Eagle Pass will be the site of a
special commemoration this 4th of
July weekend - - a reenactment of
July 4, 1865 when that border city
was the site of the last event related
to the American Civil War: The
Graveyard of the Confederacy”
incident
On that July 4, over 120 years ago,
the celebrated Confederate General
Jo Shelby and 500 of his loyal soldiers
were gathered on the banks of the Rio
Grande They were on their way to
Mexico seeking refuge and a new life
It was a sad. touching scene
General “Old Jo” Shelby had led his
men through more than 200 en-
counters with Union troops and was
never defeated Who among them
would forget Shelby’s raid in 1863,
nearly 1500 miles into Missouri and
back through 50,000 Union soldiers’’
Or the battle of Cane Hill where they
won the name ’Iron Brigade"'’
These men felt lost and betrayed,
they were unwilling to surrender .
to accept the collapse of the
Confederacy They preferred to live
in exile in Mexico There on the banks
of the great river a unique - and
memorable scene was unfolding
Observed only by a few Mexicans on
the bluffs by the village of Piedras
Negras. General Shelby sat astnde
his large sorrel horse in the
resplendent uniform of Brigadier
General. Army of the Confederacy
An intelligent face with flowing
brown mustache and chin whiskers,
was shaded by a broad brimmed
slouch hat with a large black plume
All the soldiers surrounded their
resting place and, h the wonts of
General Shelby s aide. Captain John
N Edw ards “was given once more to
beloved general with bared, bowed
heads Very carefully their cherished
battle flag was brought from its
the winds before the swift waves
of the Rio Grande dosed over it
forever ”
As three colonels held up the
cherished stars and bars banner for
a few moments the emotion was
almost electric. Then, the battle flag
of Shelby's Division was lowered
slowly and sadly beneath the water -
The graveyard of the Confederacy.
The troop then slowly, silently
crossed the river into Mexico The
black plume was no km* t m Shefty’s
hat - it too had been entombed in the
river
Everyone is welcome to participate
in the recreation of this rare and
touching event in Eagle Pass this
July 4th. Simply come to 8hriby Park
at river’s edge. This event will start
at 10 AS AM. Many other events are
planned for a fun-filled July 4th
weekend in Eagle Pass and in Old
Mexico
