Universal City -- The inside punch
provided by Randolph's Grace sis-
ters, Tammy and Tania, proved to be
more than the Hondo girls' basketball
team could handle.
Randolph defeated the Owls, 52-

The Owls (5-16 season, 0-5 dis-
trict) will be home on Friday, when
they host Cole in a 6:30 contest On
Tuesday, the Owls will visit Bandera,
in another 6:30 game.
As has been the case in recent
games, the Owls had most of their
trouble in the first half. Randolph
took control of the game early, with a
24-10 lead at the half.
Tammy Grace provided most of the
first half scoring for the Ro-Hawks,
with 16 points on her way to a game-
high 22. Tania Grace finished with
11, with nine of those after halftime.
Although Hondo shot only seven
times at the free throw line, the Owls
performed well when they had the
chance, hitting six of those. Randolph
was 12-of-24 at the line.
Everyone who got into the game for
Hondo scored, with two players,
Karen Rummel and Cheryl Harris,
scoring five each. Four other players
scored four for the night

The only area of the game where
the Owls outshone the Panthers was
the free throw line, where Hondo was
7-of-15. MV struggled greatly at the
line, hitting only 5-of-29, for 17%.

Universal City - A shot here, and
a shot there that just wouldn't fall, cost
the Hondo Owls a chance at their first
win in the District 25-AAA boys' bas-
ketball race Tuesday night.
Randolph outlasted the Owls, 58-
54, as Hondo slipped to 0-3 in the
district race, and 7-16 for the season.
Hondo will try to climb back into
the picture this week, with two more
district games on tap. Cole will visit
the Activities Center Friday at 8 p.m.,
and Hondo will travel to Bandera in a
Tuesday 8 p.m. contest
Despite the loss, Hondo coach
Dwayne Gerlich felt his team is close
to jelling.
"The difference in this game and
other games we've played recently,"
said the coach, "is that this time, we
didn't have a bad quarter. We stayed
with them the whole game, and they
just won it at the end.
"That's a lot better than losing it in
the first quarter, and having to play
from 20 points behind."
The Owls trailed the Ro-Hawks,
27-24, at halftime and 42-41 at the
end of three quarters.
Seven players for the two teams hit
double figures, accounting for all but
eight of the game's total points.
Hondo's Jimmy Gonzales led all
scorers with 25 points, while Doug
Beesley had 13 points to go with his
14 rebounds, and Adam Guerra
scored 12.
, For Randolph (2-1, 9-12), Jason
Symon had 21, including three three-
point shots. Bird Kelly scored 12,
Bobby Bryant had 11 and Telly Anto-
ine added 10.
"Our players are working ex-
tremely hard," said Coach Gerlich.
"We're not too far away from putting
it together."

tayed atop the district race, with a
58-42 win over the Owls.
The Panthers balanced sewing at-
tack in the first period helped them
build a 15-6 lead. In the second pe-
riod, M V went inside to John Wingate
and Chris Waits to stretch the margin
to 27-13 at the half. During that quar-
ter, the Owls managed only one
bucket, having to rely on free throws
for most of their first half sewing.
The teams came out evenly
matched in the second half. Adam
Guerra began to light up the board for
Hondo, finishing the game with a
team-high 20 points, with 16 coming
in the half.
Wingate led the Panthers with 20
points also, while Robert Vasquez,
who hit a pair of threes, had 10.

Which direction will the Hondo
Owls be traveling for the next two
athletic years? That question will be
answered this morning (Thursday)
when the University Interscholasdc
League assigns its district alignments
for the 1992-94 school years.
Hondo ISD Athletic Director Dan
Schreiber will go to Region XX head-
quarters in San Antonio this morning
at 9. At that time, UIL officials will
hand out packets to each school repre-
sentative in Greater S.A.
If the UIL keeps its conferences
similar to their current sizes, Hondo
will remain a 3 A school, as it has been
for more than 30 years. That includes
about 20 years as a 2A school, before
the UIL did away with Class B and
moved every conference up an 'A.'
Other schools most likely remain-
ing 3A, which are also close enough
that they could have an impact on
Hondo's new district, include Medina
Valley, Devine, Bandera, Cole, Som-
erset, Poteet, Crystal City, and La
Vemia. Cotulla and Jourdanton are
on the 2A-3A borderline, but will
likely remain in 3 A. Marion is there as
well, but will probably stay 2A.
Ingram has a strong possibility of
qlimbing to 3A, while Pearsall and
Fredericksburg are likely candidates
to make the jump from 3A to 4A.
Randolph is looking at a probable
drop from 3A to 2A.
DHanis will remain in Division
1A. The UIL, however, has experi-
mented in recent years with separate
districts for larger and smaller enroll-
ment 1A schools in basketball and
track, and could do that again. In ad-
dition, D'Hanis is in a different dis-
trict for every sport in which it partici-
pates. The current football district for
D’Hanis also includes Center Point,
Rocksprings, Nueces Canyon, Sabi-
nal, Medina, and Leakey. Harper,
Charlotte, Utopia, Knippa, and Com-
stock are also included in area dis-
tricts for basketball and spring sports.
Current area 2A schools include
Natalia, Lytle, Brackett, Dilley, La
Pryor and Asherton. A possibility ex-
ists that Asherton may drop to 1A.
Current area 4A schools are
Uvalde, Pleasanton, Carrizo Springs,
Kerrville Tivy, Boefne, Floresville,
and San Antonio schools Alamo
Heights, Southside, West Campus,
Kennedy, Edgewood, and Memorial.
Whichever direction Hondo goes
for its district games, plans will be
worked out so that the Owls will face
its traditional rivals in non-district.
Complete realignment details will
be included in next week's Hondo formation is available today, it will be

It's no Bull:
Spurs are growing up
By Jeff Berger, Anvil Herald Sports Editor
It may take the rest of the season to know for sure, but from
where I sit, the San Antonio Spurs grew up Tuesday night.
The Chicago Bulls had been all but invincible in 1991-92. They
were 36-5 on the year, which is a pace to win more than 70
games. That would easily qualify as an NBA record. The Bulls
had won 13 straight, and when a defending champion has won
that many in a row, it can be a hard train to derail.
So what happened Tuesday? The Spurs, with their loudest
gathering of 16,057 this year (the Noisemeter registered 112 db),
knocked off the Bulls, 109-104. It was a game where San Antonio
never trailed, and was tied only once, if you count 0-0.
It was a game where the Spurs, every time they needed a big
play, got one. The big efforts came both on offense and defense.
Early on, it was the defense which set the tone. Midway
through the opening period, the Spurs led 16-4. During that
stretch, Michael Jordan tried to move into Mr. Robinson’s neigh-
borhood, not once, but twice. Both times, David replied, "Mike!
Get that garbage outta here!" REEE-JECT!
Moments later, Michael nonchalanted a pass while bringing the
ball up the floor. It went right to David, playing a very high,
almost midcourt, post Mr. Robinson drove to the hoop, where
Jordan looked as if he might cut him off... NOT!
Michael gives up. David jams. Crowd goes nuts.
Chicago, of course, didn't get to be World Champions by giving
up after six minutes. They fought back, and despite an occasional
Sean Elliott baseline shake-n-bake, drive-n-slam, or a Terry
Cummings follow shot which just barely curled in, the Bulls cut
the difference to 50-46, and had the ball with less than a minute to
play in the half. The shot missed, however, and the Spurs worked
it up the floor to a Willie Anderson bucket. With the shot clock
off, the Bulls misfired again, and Mr. Robinson pulled down the
carom with four seconds left
The outlet pass to Antoine Carr set up the shot of the game,
when he launched a 50-footer at the buzzer. 100% Cotton.
Suddenly, the Spurs, who had nearly seen a 16-point lead
evaporate to two, were up nine at intermission.
I>uring the second half, the Bulls cut the difference to a point
on three occasions. With the score 73-72, the Bulls were shooting
to take the lead. But with seemingly just enough electricity on
their side, the Spurs somehow ooaxed the shot away from the
hoop. They clung to a 78-74 lead after three periods, as Scottie
Pippen's buzzer layup rolled in and then harmlessly back out.
Twice during the final two minutes, after a quarter full of
Jordan fall-away jumpers and malfunctioning Jumbo-Tron score-
boards, Chicago pulled within one. Willie ripped a 15-footer. The
Bulls' Stacy King maneuvered in for an answer layup. David
drove the paint for a thunder dunk. He drew the foul, but missed
the free throw.
In an uncharacteristic panic-attack, Jordan launched a 35-footer.
Sean got the rebound, and sealed the win with two free throws.
The victory for the Spurs is just one in a long line of 82 regular-
season contests. But it takes a team of tremendous ability to rise
to the occasion time and time again as the Spurs did Tuesday. It
takes a truly "Bullish" effort.
San Antonio, despite the recent firing of coach Larry Brown,
could finally be ready to take that step to the next level. If rite win
over the Bulls is any indication, the Spurs have arrived. _
