New show barn, stalls waiting
Stock show set for Feb. 2-3
Ready and waiting for next
week’s 1970 Medina County
Junior Livestock Show is the
huge new all-metal show and
sales barn recently construct-
ed near the auction barns at
the airbase. It affords 10,000
square feet of enclosed, all-
weather exhibition area.
The facility was made
possible through the coopera-
tion of Mayor Jerome Decker
and the city council.
George Use, as spokesman
for the committee whose oth-
er members are C^A. Gilliam
and Hartley Howard, appear-
ed before the Council in Oc-
tober to present the request
that the city underwrite th'e
cost*-Show officials had re-
paid an earlier loan of about
$13,000 within seven - years
instead of the 20 years allow-
ed. Based on this "good rec-
ord" the new loan of $14,753
(after bids) was approved.
The building provides a
show and sales arena 36x60
feet, with portable enclosures
and stalls bleacher seats far
about 1500 persons; rest-
rooms; space for concessions
and exhibits and floor space
for the records division.
The entire area is we 11-
Ughted electrically and by
means of skylights. The dirt
floor is hard-packed. As the
equipment is all portable, the
building can be cleared com-
pletely for lease as a ware-
house or for other purposes
between shows as a means of
revenue. ‘
The 29th annual Medina
County livestock Show opens
for two days, Feb. 2-3 with
380 entries. These will in-
clude calves, lambs, hogs and
poultry to be exhibited by
members of the area’s 4 - H
clubs and FFA chapters.
Animals will be received
Monday 7 to 10 a.m. Swine
will be judged at 1:00 p.m.;
lambs at 5:00 p.m. that same
day. Poultry will be judged
Monday afternoon. Commer-
cial calves will be graded in
the auction pens.
Calf judging is scheduled
for Tuesday morning and the
winning calves wiU be sold
at regular auction at 11 o’
clock. All other animals will
be auctioned, beginning at
1:00 p.m, »
Food concessions at the
show, in the new building,
will be under the direction of
the Natalia Boosters Club.

for filing only five days a-
way, 19 candidates had filed
their declarations with How-
ard Wallace, County Demo-
cratic chairman, as of Wed-
nesday morning.
Of these, 17 persons will

clude those of county judge;

numbers 1, 3 and 5; county

15 years. He married a Hon-

Lacy Gilliam, who is a Soph-
omore in Hondo High and
Richard Heiring, a 7th grader
in Lacy School,
The Herrings have two
grandsons, Jeff B a ligand Marc
Finger and a granddaughter,
Tina Lorraine Ball,
Herring attended school
in Floresville. He enlisted in
the U.S. Army, August, 1949,
received his honorable d i s-
charge in 1952, with the rank
of Sergeant. He served 18

Mangold, 47, is a retired
Air Force officer and ranch-
er. He is presently employed

do High School in 1940 and

Local drivers of school
buses have been Issued warn-
ing tickets for infringement
of traffic laws within the ci-
ty.
Chief Petri reports that vi-
olations include speeding,
failure to observe stop signs,
and failure to stop at rail-
road crossings, as required by
state law.
Wednesday, a little girl
received leg i n j u r i e s when
she was thrown to.the floor
of a bus and required hospital
attention, according to Petri.
"Supt. Barry is aware of
the situation," said Petri. "I
hope that the tickets will
serve as warnings ttfat our
traffic laws will be enforced
and that the drivers will take
heed and avoid any serious
charges."

Mangold studied econo-
mics at the University of Ma-
ryland and received 396 hours
of additional education at the
Air Command and Staff
School, Maxwell AFB, A 1 a -
bama. He held various com-
mand and administrative pos-
itions while in the Air Force,
Mangold Is married to the
former Miss Stella Grell of
Hondo. They have two
daughters, Mrs, George Fek-
ete of San Antonio and Laura
Mangold, a junior in Hondo
High School. ‘
During his Air Force c a -
reer, Mangold was trained in
the administration of justice
through experience in admin-
istering company punishment
under the Uniform Code of
Military Justice, and as a
member of special courts
martial boards. He served on
the latter as a field grade of-
ficer.
Mangold says, "If elected
to office, I pledge honesty,
integrity and fair treatment
to all — regardless of race
or color."
