One of D’Hanis High
School's athletic coaches,
Todd Craft, and his family of
six were chosen by the
American Broadcasting
Company's hit show, Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition.
As is the show's procedure,
the Crafts’ house will be
rebuilt to fit the needs of the
family and the special needs
of their severely disabled
three-year old child, Isabella.
The 1,900 square foot home,
at the corner of Avenue Q and
30th Street, was undersized
for the family and lacked any
accessibility features. .
The Crafts were told they
were in competition with
four other families in the San

Kermit the Frog, standing in for series host Ty Pennington,
talks to the family from the bus
parent who was an athletic
coach—the theme of the
show being about Texas high
school coaches and how they
play an integral role in their
community on what is
usually a meager salary.
Todd's wife, Elizabeth, is a
stay-at-home mother who
cares for her four children,-
two of whom have disabilities.
Accordingly, the family of six
has had to live on Todd's
income in a home made for
able-bodied individuals.
Before they were whisked
away to a secret location for the
week to allow ABC to coordinate
the home make-over, the Craft
family said they had been
ridiculously busy preparing for
their potential Extreme
Makeover. Friday, the family
talked to the producers of the
show. Saturday, they had to leave
their home to allow the ABC
scouting team to examine their
house. They were told to pack
just in case they were chosen

Hondo takes step toward
November home-rule vote
By William Hoover

The City of Hondo is
moving forward with the
steps needed to adopt a
home-rule charter. Hondo is
one of a handful of Texas
cities with populations above
5,000 that does not operate
under a home-rule charter.
A city must have a
population of 5,000 to be
eligible to hold a home-rule
charter election. Council went
into executive session Mon-
day to discuss the creation of
the charter commission and
the status of a search for a new
police chief.
Mayor Jim Danner and the
rest of council believe it is time
Hondo had the extra control
and zoning powers of a home-
rule charter. A home-rule
charter is equivalent to a city's
constitution, and is usually
drawn up by a charter com-
mission with public input.
"We agreed to appoint a
charter commission,” said
Danner. “We will be working
with the Hondo Economic
Development Corporation,
to help us solicit names. We
have not decided how big the
committee should be, but we
