Mail Call!
Dear Bumis:
IT ISNOTTOOLATE!
maintain and operate a
Canal in the Zone. The
«-*» * •• -enJsws isss
thinking person m the V the Panamanians. Be-
pei
U.S.A. All^the contro-
versy concerning the Pan-
ama Cand, iro and con,
has disturbed me for some
time. In order to get the
answer to these questions,
I have done some extei s-
ivestudy to find out what
the real truth is and not
what seme politician says
There are several things
that the records reveal
No. 1: We are told that we
do not own the Canal. The
fact is that the U.S. paid
> every property owner in
'• the Zone a fair and
agreeable price for his
.• property and all titles to
said properties wdre trans-
fer ed to the U.S. at the
time of these payments.
We also paid the French,
Colombian, and Panama
governments for their in-
iterests in the Zone.
No. 2: We are told that
v. the* U.S. is merely prying
" rent on the Canal and
j I Zone property. The fact is
| | j the money the U.S. pays
1 v’to Paiama annually is to
v replace the revenue for a
* little Panamanian railroad
side shaving an income to
finance their governmei t.
but he is going to vote for
it anyway.
Do 1 hear the Senator
saying that his coastitu-
ants are not smart enough
to undo-stand the simple
language of a treaty that
is designed to penalize our
Country and in no way to
aid it?
If the Canal is neutral,
this mea ns that enemies of
the U.S. are free to use the
canal in tine of war. Tlsy
can pass their war ships
uiuunc; uni guvmiiiiuii, can ptess inar war snip
their independence was and supplies through the
guaranteed by the U.S.A. canal to be used against
1
$which_crosses the isth-
Sovereignty of
Panama Canal is
No. 3: We are told the
"Canal" is absolute and
has no commercial value.
The fact is, it can handle
about 10,000 more ships
per year than are now
being handled. Only 6
percent of the ships in the
World can't pass through
it because of size. One real
surprise is that 70 perceit
of die ships that ao pass
through the canal either
have an origin or dest-
ination in a U.S. port.
A ve*y important fact is
that the U.S. Navy must
use the Canal to move
ships from the Atlantic to
Pacific Oceans as we have
only one navy.
Senator Tower voted
against the first part of
the New Proposed Treaty,
however. Senator Lloyd
Bentsen voted for it.
Senator Bentsen made
this statanent: "That if
we understood, we would
also be in favor of neutral -
us.
No 4 We are told that
we shall gain respect
throughout the World by
ratifying this so called
treaty Do you suppose
any country ever gained
any measure of respect by
surrender to threats or
any sort of intimidation
from a Marxist Dictator?
We will be shouting to the
World; friend and foe,
that we no longer value
our property or moral
responsibilities to stand
up and be counted. Would
it pot seem logical that if
we are really sincere about
the fair use of the Canal,
we should retain contrd
and run it like Freedom
Loving P®ple Should!
I have thoughton occas-
ion of my brother who lost
his life'in WWLI. He is
asking me to explain the
"give away" of the canal.
Believe me 1 have a hard
time with the answer.
£mus. Our
'the
forever
as long as we
ity for the Panama I beg each of you to
Canal.” Senator Bentsen teally think about this and
also admits that his mai let Senator Bentsen know
has been heavily against in no uncertain terms that
he is expected to vote
against this "give away"
which is the next part of
the Treaty to be voted <n
in April. We must all wr ite
him concerning this. We
need to get as many
letters as possible on his
de«k in the 2or 3weeks to
come. Let him know that
this is not a party or
political question but
American, and that the
Americans are coming.
Write to him now!
Senator Lloyd Bent-
sen, Senate Office Bldg..
Washington D.C. 20610
Sincerely.
Tom Kuykendall
P.S. 1 ask you to write
the letter now. It might be
the best 13c investment
vou ever made.
T.K.
Dear Bumis:
1 am wondering how
you came bv your infor-
mation of the farmers
encounter at the Hidalgo
bridge at McAllen? What
did the farmers do to
"punctuate their presence
with a little defiance". The
whok> state, and nation,
for that matter, knew the
farmers were planning to
be in McAllen long before
they were there. Do you
believe they went for
trouble?? As for the fa mi -
ers causing an internation-
al incident; there are
things happening each
day that are far worse
than trucks being stopped
on a bridge and driver
talked to by farmers and
simply asked what they
were transporting. The
farmers didn't spend the
night in jail but a court
yard It was their poor
treatment by officials at
the bridge and the open
enclosure that caused the
Civil Liberties to "jump
in" as vou stated.

So, you think the
Georgia fanner came all
that way with "much ado
over nothing.” I believe he
did what he felt he needed
to do. along with all the
others. They would all
rat her farm than protest.
After so many letters,
telegrams, etc. to govern-
ors. secretaries of agricult-
ure. yes the President and
their own organization.
Then finally another
method maybe the an-
swer Other laborers strike
and protest. Why not the
farmer? I enjoyed the
letter one farmer wrote his
Congressman. That said
"Tell President Carter
those 69 people we are
feeding: better tell 30 of
them they aren't going to
get anything if prices
don’t change." "Hie farm-
ers not only- write their
officials, they went to
Washington and Austin
and other capitols to tell
their story. If you believe,
as "you stated, that heavy-
pressure from the public
will alter the mind of
Conp-ess and perhaps the
president, and you believe
the farmer has a reason for
protest' what kteps you
and anyone else not in the
farming industry from
writing. “If you eat vou
are involved in agricult-
ure." I’m sure you been
behind a few vehicles with
that sticker on themvsome
place*..
1 do believe numbers
can change the mind of
pulilir officials. This was
quite evident when farm-
ers at honx* heard how
their neighbors and fellow
farmers were treated and
came to McAllen by the
thousand to let it he know
they were with them The
TV news showed plainly
the policeman all smiles as
the farmers wen* on the
bridge Nothing more was
done the first day then the
last day at the bridge
Yes. Burnis. they came

and numbers do make a
difference.
You should know how
long it takes'to get an

Carter Hondo got World

and justly so I "believe* it
