Iranian student claims
bum checks patriotism'

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP)
An Iranian student has told
police he was asked to take part
in an alleged scheme to pass
forged checks for the good of his
country.
“They appealed to my
patriotism, they talked me into
it for the good of Islam, my
country and my leader," police
quoted Gholarn Rcv.a Pakyari
as saying following his arrest
Monday,
Pakyari, a 23-year-old
student at Texas Southmost
•College, was charged with
trying to pass a forged check
and jailed in lieu of $20,000

The student said persons in
Houston asked him this sum-
mer to open a bank account and
deposit thjj questionable
checks, saiaBrownsville police
detective Tony Hess.
Hess said Pakyari had
deposited checks totaling
$13,000 since December on an
account of the National Bank of
Kuwait in the Pan American
Bank of Brownsville, The
Kuwaiti bank had an account
with the Irving Bank and Trust
Co. of New York.
After placing the funds in a
Pan American account, most of
the money was then transferred
by check to other accounts,
Hess said.
The checks on the Kuwaiti
bank’s account were made out
on a typewriter to Maxx Jake
Makly. Hess said Pakyari
opened his account in that name
and when arrested had a set of
identification in the name
"Jake Makly.”
The student was arrested by-
try irtg to deposit a check at a
drive-in window.
“I think we just got the tip of
the iceberg right now,” Hess
said.

weekend with their mother and
grandmother, Mildred Chap-
man.

Deaton ate supper with Leslie
and Beulah Wester Saturday
night.

Canton visited the Willie Davis
family last week.
Mozelle Davis and Odell
lawrence ate lunch with Lillian

dinner for Herman, Harmon
and Walter Weir, also Cue
Sullivan of Sulphur- Bluff, will
be served Sunday, Jan. 27, at
the Tira Community "-Sinter.
They have the same birth date,
Jan, 23, and have celebrated
their get-together for many
years. All friends and relatives
are invited to attend.
’ Pecan farmers . were very
happy to see a machanical
pecan harvester roll into the
community last week, and it
certainly gathered many
pounds of nuts. However, quite
a ‘bit of manual pick-up is
scheduled to be done by the
farmers, crows, cows and
squirrels. 'The community has
had a bountiful harvest.
Farmers were delighted to
see Saturday night's and
Sunday's rainfall.

E1MORY — District Attorney
Jim Chapman reports that
William Frederick Jones III of
Edgewood pled guilty this Week
in Rains County to ,a,charge of
felony possession of marijuana.
Chapman reported that Jones
was - assessed a two-year
probated sentence and a fine of
$750 by Eighth Judicial District
Judge Lanny Ramsay.
The staff of the district at-
torney’s office will return to
Emory on Friday to convene
the Raias County Grand Jury.
