Ortiz, though not In a conscious
• state, and not able to verbally com-
municate, has managed to recognize
at least some of her family meiri-
; bers.
"The other night when mom
was right there beside her, she said
’Mom’," Ruiz said. "She's in and out
a lot "
The medical team in Lubbock
has preformed various medical tests

>;*done to Ortiz in the accident A CAT
:>Scan (Computerized Axial Tomogra-
phy) revealed that there was no injury
*‘ to her brain, or bleeding internally,
and she had no broken bones at all.
Doctors plan to start taking her
off some of the medication over the
weekend to see if Ortiz will start to
regain more of her natural conscious-
ness.
'The doctors said in two or three
days she should start coming around
after they take her off some of the
drugs," said Ruiz.
When Ortiz was thrown from
the vehicle, during the accident, it
appears that she first landed on her
leg before her head impacted with the
roadway. This could have saved her
life, but did require a skin graft surgery
on Wednesday to cover the large area
that was tom away.
, "God wanted her around a bit
more," Ruiz sakl. "We have to wait
and see what God wants us to learn
from this."
Ortizsfamily lire been back and
forth to Lubbock keeping almost a
constant vigil over her at the hospital.
Her family, mother Atanreia, and fa-
ther Anselmo Ortiz, brothers James,
George, and Jerry, and sisters Rosa,
Alma, Stephanie have all been to visit
Ortiz in the hospital. *
"We're [Ortiz's family] are so
deeply grateful for everything that
everyone has done for us," Ruiz
said. "We are grateful for all the calls
and all the prayers. The prayers are
the most important."
Patricia's family also feels the
deepest sympathies for the Martinez
family, and sends their prayers out
to them as well, and hopes everyone
will remember both families in their
prayers.
"The Martinez family has our
deepest sympathies and prayers,"
Ruiz said. "We've known them a
long time, and our prayers are with
them."
In a story in the December 7th edi-
tion of the Sentinel, Ms. Ortiz was mis-
identifled as Brenda Patricia Ortiz, instead
of Belinda Patricia Ortiz. The Sentinel
received information, including names of
those involved from official sources.
