1. Have the battery case examined for
cracks und leaks at the tou where I he cells
arc scaled. Test the battery for charge — if
necessary, have the battery brought up to
full charge_ (Kvcn a fully charged bat-
tery has only 40 p"r cent of its energy avail-
able at zt>r0 temperature.)
2. Make sure that the battery cables sre
not corroded or fruyrd and the insulation is
not eaten away. Cables should he tightened
solidly on the battery posts and the battery
firmly fastened in the hanger.
3. Have the generator inspected to be
sure that the brushes are seating properly
and not cutting into the armsture, so that
the generator will he able to furnish suffi-
ciant current to keep the battery fully
charged.
4. To reduce the battery current requir-
ed to start the ear, have the spark plugs
cleaned and the gaps set to specifications.
The spark plugs’ wires should be inspeetted

Remove excessive drag in the engine and
transmission by changing the nil and grease
to winter grade, (Two and one-half times
as much energy is required to turn the
engine over at zero tempera!lire than st 80"
with H. A. K. 20 oil.)
7. Practice starting the car with the
(dutch disengaged so that the battery won’t
have to turn the gears in the transmission as
well as the engine.
M, When starting the ear make sure the
headlights are off as they draw between HR
to 40 watts of energy which the battery must
furnish in addition to the energy required
to start (lie ear,

keep the battery filled with water to the
proper level. Only the approved battery
electrolyte or approved water should he
used. (In freezing weather the ear should
he used immediately after the water is sdded
to the battery to insure its mixture with the
electrolyte and thus eliminating the possihi*
lify of freezing )
