Anyone who missed visiting that
giouUry show at least several times
last week, lost out on the best
thing that has occurred in Here-
ford for a long til me. On each of
any four or five trips over there
I found specimens from the poultry
yard that had not attracted my
Attention before.
I juat happened to be present
when Judge I^nsden selected the
Brand champion bird of the show.
(Had ttie decision was strictly up to
itim. It was his business and what
he was there for, but it wasn't
May for him.
What gave me the biggest thrill
of all was the comment of Dr.
G. E. Aekerhan of Clovis to whom
the grand champion White Leg-
horn rooster belonged (I can call
them rofwters here.) Ackerman
Is himself a llecns««d A. P. A.
Judge, and he said he would have
grlven the grand championship to
41. P. Wnrren of Prlona on his
yonng Rhode Island lied rooster.
1 claim that Is being a good sport

• Those chickens surely were
beauties. I tried to show my
wife which one almost won the
grand prize, but couldn’t find It
Among the rest of the Reds until
someone showed It In a pen with
*ome other*.
Judge fjinsdcn said It was the
heat exhibition of birds he ever
aaw with the same number In a
ahow. What, he meant, lie ex-
grained, was that the birds were
of such pcrftw’Hofj Jf was hard

so long for relief from It to eorae
from somewhere else, it would l»e
a flue thing If Deaf Riulth county
would lift Itself by Its own boot-
straps, out of the mud, and solve
the depression here by Itself. We
heur so often about an ounce of
prevention being better than a
pound of cure that folks think that
it Is the solution of all problems.
Whatever It Is that alls the whole
country now doesn’t need preven-
tion—It needs a cure If anything
over did. Let's put that highway
program over.
No one doubts that eventually
tlho State of Texas will take up
all highway bends. Well, it will
bo two years before any tax pay-
ment* would be due on a bond
Issue voted after next January 1.
When the state <!««■ take up out-
standing highway bonds, Deaf
Smith county will have to pay
Its share of them whether or not
wo have any paved highways, and
If we do not already have them
voted by that time It will be as hard
to get them afterwards as It Is
for Deaf Smith or any other Pan-
handle county to get needed recog
nitlon from the powers that be
down In the state.
Let's get a highway program
going.
lieing laid down, the Brand would
taka over all unfinished subscrip-
tions, and the Recorder would be
no more. Mr. Kelly aakl It came
full from his heart to recognise
The Brand as the only paper to
be published and It was his opin-
ion none other should be encour-
aged.

Hereford’s elevation was re-
ported as 8810 feet, Vega's as

R. W. Baird, then sheriff of
Deaf Smith county, had added to
the dignity of his office by buy-
ing an automobile.
A movement was being put on
foot to “put Hereford on the map."
It was proposed that 100 men
subscrilie $90 each for five years
to a Tuna to let tne woriu kuuw

is now known that the registered
Hereford Industry, agricultural pro-
ductions and Hereford high school
activities have done more to ad-

to get things started for the big
annual sale of registered Here-

life of the city, too, and will bring
scores of buyers from distant
states and countries.
Statistics show there are more
registered Hereford cattle In Deaf

county In the United fUates, and
the breeding equal* or excells any
of them.
