Archer City Opens
District Play With Win Over Olney
Archer City opened the 1987 District
9-2A race Friday night with an 81-67
victory over the Olney Cubs. The
invading Cubs, who defeated the Cats
early in the year, found themselves on
the short end of the score throughout
the entire contest. After Olney tied the
score at 4-4, AC went to work and built
a 19-14 first quarter lead.
The action was fast and furious in the
second period with the Cubs applying
continuous full court pressure. The
Wildcats withstood the test and
outgunned their southern neighbors
22-18 to take a 9 point margin into
intermission.
Both squads cooled off in the 3rd
period with the Cats scoring only 12
points and the Cubs, 11. The Cubs
kept up the relentless pressure and
closed the gap to 58-50 with 5:56 left in
the game. The Cubs 6’5” Clint Holden
fouled out of the contest at the 5:43
mark, but the rest of the Cubs
continued to battle and closed to
within 6 points (64-58) with 3:10
showing on the clock. Tony Pollock hit
both ends of a 1 and 1 at 2:39, and Billy
Dugan got 2 from close in to push the
margin back to 10 at 68-58. The Cubs
kept it at 8 points at the 2:00 mark, but
the final outcome became apparant at
1:34 when Olney was hit with a
technical foul. Mark Crelia hit all three
free throws, and, before the Cubs
could respond, Crelia and Tony Pollock
added field goals to push the margin to
75-60 with 1:01 left in the contest. The
teams traded buckets and free throws,
and Olney’s last 2 pointer with no time
on the clock set the 81-67 final in the
record books.
Archer City’s Billy Dugan led all
scorers with 29 points. Eric Powell hit
19 points, Crelia, 15, and Pollock 10.
The Cats hit 14 of 16 free throws in the
last quarter with Crelia going 9 for 9.
The Cubs also had four players in
double figures with Bryan Schmidt
canning 15, Gregg Holden, 11, and
Scott Sparkman and Chris Rogers 10
each.
The win moves the Wildcats season
record to 18-3 while Olney falls to 13-5.
At press time Tuesday, Archer City
was hosting Electra. Friday (to-
morrow) night, the Wildcats will travel
to Seymour and Tuesday they will host
Henrietta in Archer City.
Trojanettes Win One And Lose One
The Windthorst Trojannetes defeated
rocked Goldburg 47-16, Tuesday,
January 13, behind the 16 point
performance of June Veitenheimer.

quarter lead, The Lady Mustangs

lead 13-12 at halftime. Megargel took a
7-point, 25-18 margin into the final
quarter which they maintained for the
