The Texas Rangers' Lives and
Legends was the program subject of the
Saturday meeting of the Dr. Branch T.
Archer Chapter Daughters of the
Republic of Texas. Mrs. Ben Buerger
was hostess for the meeting in her
home in the Sturgeon Cmmunity.
Mrs. W.C. Young brought the
program and based much of her subject
of the life of Texas Ranger, Newton
Joseph Jones (1855-1948), who was a
close relative of the Young family.
The Texas Rangers were begun in
1823 by Stephen F. Austin, to
“establish order, maintain justice from
the Rio Grande to Red River.” Austin
began with ten men who were paid from
Austin’s personal account, equipped
with the noted Colt five shooter.
Among the famous quotes about the'
Rangers were: “no man in the wrong
can stand against a man in the right,
who stands up and keeps-comin.”
The well worn story about the mayor
who sent to the capital for help in
quelling a riot and when the train
arrived, only one Ranger was aboard. In
reply to the city officials as to where his
help was, the Ranger said,” one
ranger- one riot.”
The Rangers were disbanded in 1935
by Gov. M.A. Ferguson but restored to
full operating capacity under Gov. Jim
Allred. Later they were combined with
the Department of Public Safety and the
Homer Garrison Museum in Austin
contains much of the memorabilia.
Chapter president Linda Barron gave a
report of the year’s activities to submit
to the state headquarters to be
published in the DRT annual. She also
reported that a Fact Sheet on the Battle
of the Alamo has been compiled by the
state office and copies will be
distributed to each Texas history
teacher in Archer county, Wichita Falls
and Henrietta.
Hazel Mullis reported that she has
deposited records and papers of pioneer
Matthew Parker in the Fort Belknap
archives and in the DRT library at San
Antonio.
Barron announced the DRT state
convention will be held in Dallas. May
13-15 and several members plan to
attend.
Members present Saturday were Ms.
Barron, Corene Murphy, Jean
Patterson, Mullis, Ruby Robertson,
Helen Young and the hostess, Pat
Buerger. Special guests included Mrs
Nancy Meyer, Wichita Falls, Mrs
Albert Buerger, and Miss France
Duren, Archer City.
