Lobpries Named To
Leadership Institute
-
Lawrence Lobpries has been selected
by the Scholarship Committee of Austin
College as one of fifteen students to
participate in the first Leadership Insti-
tute to begin in the Fall of 1995. Des-
ignated as one of Austin College’s most
prestigious awards, it was presented to
those students who exhibit exceptional
characteristics for potential as student
leaders and high levels of academic work.
One hundred fifty-eight aspiring fresh-
men applied for the institute. Fifty-three
were invited to the campus in February
for a day of interviews and leadership
simulations. Fifteen were then selected
to participate in the Institute with an
accompanying scholarship with an
equivalent four-year value of $24,000.
“Without question the first year’s pool
of Leadership Institute candidates will
be very difficult to parallel in next year’s
competition,” stated Jay Evans, Senior
Associate Director of Adm issions. “You
should be extremely proud to have been
selected from this distinguished circle
of students.”
Lobpries, a 1995 graduate of Archer
City High School, was also selected to
receive an Academic Scholarhsip with
an equivalent four-year value of $12,000.
He will also be a member of the Austin
College Kangaroo football team. Cur-
rently a member of the NAIA, Austin
College will become a member of NCAA
Division III in 1996-97. “We are very
excited that Lawrence will become a
member of our football team,“ stated
Head Coach David Norman. “ We feel
that he will have a definite impact on our
program!”
Austin College, now in its 146th year,
is a private liberal arts college related by
covenant to the Presbyterian Church
(USA). The campus is located in
Sherman, Texas.

Paul and Lisa York will be ministering
in Ethiopia with Jim and Patsy Mac-
auley, missionaries Paul knew while
growing up as the son of missionaries in
Nigeria.
"I was called to missions as a child in
Nigeria," Paul remembers. "In college,
God reassured me of a call to Africa.
Lisa was called to missions in Africa
before meeting me, while at a Chi Al-
pha retreat. Parents, pastors, missionar-
ies, and missions leadership have all en-
couraged us in our call to Africa. Our
special interest is the training and de-
velopment of leadership in the Ethio-
pian church."

Ethiopia’s communist government
has persecuted Christians for years, yet
churches have grown under persecu-
tion. Twelve evangelical denomina-
tions now number over 4 million believ-
ers; almost all are Pentecostal in prac-
tice. There is a great hunger for long-
denied Bible training. In fact, Ethiopian
pastors say that their Christian youth are
expressing a call to ministry more than
any other occupation. To help train this
large number of potential ministers, the
very first Assemblies of God Bible
school was started in Addis Ababa in
September, 1994. The York’s assign-
ment will include training young minis-
ters at this school
The public is invited to attend Paul
and Lisa's special missions services on
June 11th and learn more about the
evangelistic oppportunities they will be
pursuing in this ancient African nation.
"The next 10 years are a special moment
in time for Ethiopia," Paul emphasizes,
"as it begins to experience religious
freedom. Ethiopians must be given the
tools to reach their nation for Christ."
