School Supply Drive
Under Way For Van ISD
By Brittle Reeves
Staff Writer
Van Community Min-
istries is on a mission to
distribute school sup-
plies to Van ISD before
the first day of school on
Aug. 26.
The supply drive is
well under way, and with
most campuses having
at least a 50 percent or
higher rate of students
eligible for free or re-
duced lunches, the need
for supplies is great.
The supply drive helps
teachers and parents re-
duce the amount of
stress that going back to
school creates.
VISD Superintendent
Don Dunn informed
teachers that there
would be a shorter sup-
ply list for the 2013-
2014 school year. The
cost per student would
be about $20, which is
drastically less than pre-
vious years.
Jane Burns,
AmeriCorps/Vista
project manager for the
Van Community Minis-
tries, feels as if the sup-
ply drive is crucial to
maintaining the educa-
tion of children of Van
ISD.
“These children need
supplies, without them
the teachers cannot pro-
vide education to the
fullest extent, and our
children are deprived of
the well-rounded educa-
tion that we could offer
them at Van,” she said.
Burns said the teach-
ers have set up wish lists
for their classes. Those
lists are comprised of
things not on the school
supply list, but items that
teachers frequently use.
Parents who wish to
purchase supplies for
their child’s specific
class can do so. Items on
the lists range from glue
sticks to backpacks,
which is a big item for
low-income families.
“They need everything
from Dry-Erase mark-
ers, manila paper, glue
sticks, construction pa-
per, crayons, markers,
erasers and map pen-
cils,” said Burns.
Donations have been
made in a monetary
fashion, but actual sup-
plies are still needed.
“I think the biggest
ticket item we need is
backpacks. Lots and lots
of backpacks,” said
Burns.
Donations can be
made at Van Community
Ministries, The Shed in
Edom or Vandal Nation
(next to Dwayne
Wheeler Insurance.)
After donations are re-
ceived, they are given to
school counselors and
disbursed as needed.
Without the
community’s help, many
Van ISD school children
would be without the
necessary supplies.
Bums also stated that,
“Van is a wonderful com-
munity, and so far our
supply drive has been
successful. We are so
grateful for how our
community has pulled
together to help these
children. We appreciate
any and all donations,
whether it is monetary or
actual supplies.”
