Explosion—
The barrels, which contain 400 barrels of oil each,
were all full at the time of the explosion.
The fire ended up completely destroying three
400 barrel storage vessels. Three other 400 barrel
storage vessels were damaged in the fire.
At around 9:35 a.m., the fire was completely ex-
tinguished and all fire departments were relieved
of the scene.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Qual-
ity, and the Texas Railroad Commission remained
on scene at press time, to ensure clean up.
There was a breach in the tank dike Allen said,
“which resulted in a small amount of salt water
and raw crude oil making its way into a small
creek.”
“The creek has been boomed and the effects are
extremely limited as a result of quick thinking and
response of the fire department,” Allen said.
The operator of the storage facility is Three Folks
Operating Company, L.L.C. from Flatonia.
“Crude oil is as flammable as gasoline or die-
sel,” Allen said.
The incident is still under investigation and the
names of the victims were still not being released
as of press time. Allen said the female victim re-
mained on life support.

million.
“With our method, it is a one-time cost, and a more
prudent approach. I also think it is more effective
against a would-be shooter, because that person doesn’t
know who on campus has a concealed handgun and
who doesn’t.”
The Van ISD measure calls for employees licensed
to carry a concealed handgun, and authorized by the
school to do so on school property, to be required to
complete additional training in “crisis intervention,
management of hostage situations and other training
as the Board or designee may determine necessary or
appropriate.”
It also limits the ammunition in a concealed hand-
gun on campus to “frangible” types to reduce the
chance of a bullet ricochet.
Fast Thursday, State Rep. Dan Flynn (R-Van) is-
sued a press release stating his support for Van ISD’s
decision.
“I completely support the members of Van ISD
School Board for their leadership and courage to face
today’s concerns and challenges head on,” Flynn said
in the press release.
Flynn also cited an e-mail Van ISD Superintendent
Don Dunn sent to district faculty and staff on Tues-
day.
On Monday, Dunn was in Austin testifying before
the Texas Senate Committee on Education and the
Texas Senate Committee on Agriculture, Rural Af-
fairs, and Homeland Security.
He was joined on a panel by the two other superin-
tendents in Texas whose districts have chosen to allow
employees to be armed — David Thweatt of Harrold
ISD and Brian Gray of Union Grove ISD.
“I think all three of us made everyone in there stop
and think a little bit. It was a good meeting,” said Dunn.

through 2015; and four spots for a four-year term
through 2017: Place 4, currently held by Charles
McCaffree; Place 5, currently held by Lesley Goode;
Place 6, currently held by Mark McClanahan; and
Place 7, currently held by Jill Dutton.

Van Zandt County Judge Rhita Koches was absent
from Monday’s meeting due to illness, and Precinct 2
Commissioner Virgil Melton Jr. was absent due to a
prior commitment.
Also in the meeting, the court approved the addition
of Van Zandt County Sheriff Lindsey Ray and Van Zandt
County Court Coordinator Kathy Jackson to the county’s
Data Advisory Board.
The court also approved a list of items from the
sheriff’s office to be sold by auction or declared as sal-
vage, and approved a second list of county-owned items
to be offered to qualified charitable organizations.
