Brief Historical Note of
Hie Devotion
Devotion to the Holy Infant
of Good Health originated in the
beautiful and ancient city of
Morelia, Mexico, towards the
end of 1942. This is how it hap-
pened.
Not very many years ago
there was a little girl who lived
in Morelia. She had always
.wanted to havo a statue of the
Infant Jesus for her very own,
but the years went by and her
desire was never satisfied.
Then one day, when she was a
grown young lady, an unknown
woman came to the door of her
godmother’s house, with a
beautiful statue of the Infant
Jesus which she wanted to sell.
It. was a lovely little figure of
the Infant Jesus, carved by an
unknown but very skillful sculp-
tor in fine-grained, fragrant
wood, and no more than eleven
inches high.
At thi3 time the young lady,
who was to be the owner oit the
statue, was living wih some re-
latives, In Mexico City. And her
godmother, anxious as the was
to give the statue to 'her at
.once, felt somehow :that her,
: godchild was not interested to
have' the beautiful Infant Jesus '
until; she came back to stay in
Morelia permanently. And so
each time the girl came home
to visit with hex family and
friends, her godmother would
. ask her eagerly: "Are you
planning to stay In Morelia for
good this time?" And each
time the answer was “No I"
And then the godmother would
decide once again, and very
sadly, that she could not give
her godchild tho statute — yet.
And then one day, and quite
suddenly, the young lady (who
had no idea that she was to get
the statue when she returned
home) felt that she must go
back to Morelia1, and that she
would live there all the rest of
her life. And when she did re-
turn, to her great joy, her god-
mother presented her with the
lovely little statue of the Infant.
Jesus.
Very soon after it came into
her possession, the Holy Infant
began to work what appeared
to be extraordinary cures for
sick persons who came to
Him for help. Observing
this happening again and
again, the owner of the
statue . found herself think-
ing of her little Infant Jesus as
“The Holy Infant of Good
Health,’F-and before * she j realiz-”
ed what she' was doing, she was
calling Him by that name. La-
ter on ecclesiastical authorities
were "to accept that name as , a
fitting one, inasmuch as the
statue represents Jesus Who is
the Saviour, and the Physican
both of our bodies and of our
souls.
Among the earliest devotees

of the Holy Infant was a cer-
tain physician who, together
with the owner of the statue,
organized the first public de-
monstration in its honor. The
demonstration took place on the
twenty-first ot April, 1944, at a
Capuchin church in the city of
Morelia. There, in the presence
of a great crowd of the Holy In-
fant's friends, the Rector of the
church crowned the wonderful
little statue in their name. It
seems significant that the crown
itself should have been donated
by another physican, this time
a woman — as though the Holy
Infant was going out of His way
to make it clear that the name
He had been given was no mere
accident.
After this public demonstra-
tion it was the custom in Mo-
relia to honor the Holy Infant
on tiie twenty-first of April each
year with a mass, offered at
the main altar of some church
in the city, followed by Rosary
and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament that same evening.
. During this time, took a no-
vena to the Holy Infant was
composed by a Poor Clare nun
of Mexico City, the printing of
which His Excellency, Luis
Maria Altamirano y Bulnes, au-
thorized on December fifth,
1946, granting an indulgence of
one hundred days for each day
of the novena. It was said m
public for tlie first time in the
Church of Our Lady of Mercy
in Morelia.
By now the fame of the Holy
Infant was spreading far be-
yond His 'native city’ of More-
lia: He was getting to be
known, not only throughout the
."whole of 'Mexico - (thel owner of ■
the statue had herself taken it
'on pilgrimage’ to many of the
capital cities), but throughout
the United States as well, the
later, thanks to the enthusias-
tic and persistent efforts of an
American Priest.
Having observed the wide-
spread growth of devotion to the
Holy Infant, His Excellency,
the Archbishop of Morelia, sug-
gested that the little statue be
brought to a public church
where the Infant Jesus could
be given more honor and glory,
and where He could win more
