Laymen’s Retreat - October 2-4
While improvement of, the un-
derstanding of, and the practice
of, the spiritual lire are the main
goals of the retreatant, the two
day of rest and relaxation (re-,
treat) from the problems of every-
day living are . most refreshing.
Each man has the opportunity to
take’ a bird's eye view of the
cares of the workday world and
to learn how to apply the great
supernatural truths to them and
thereby lighten their burdens.
The Benedictlno Fathers have
an enviable reputation for the
abundant supply of excellent food

September 8, 1959
Reverend and dear Fathers:
The 1959 observance of Catechetical Sunday is to be held in
every church in our jurisdiction on September 27, I urge you to
leave nothing undone to carry out effectively the purpose for which
this Sunday is so designated; namely, to sell the Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine to your people. As a Priest, entrusted with care
of souls, you have no choice but to become an Apostle of tile Confra-
ternity, If you are to participate in the Christ appointed mission-—
“to teach all nations.”
The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine is a “must” in every
parish. The pronouncements of the Holy See, through the years, make
that duty of your ministry very clear and imperative. Experience
since 1949, when 1 ordered that the Confraternity of Christian Doc-
trine be established in every parish, points up more and more the
fact that the success o'f the parish Confraternity depends on two
factors: first, the Priest Director; and second, an active CCD
Exeuctive Board. j
From the reports that the Chancery Office receives annually, I
can easily detect the parishe| with no CCD Executive Boards, or with
inactive ones. These parishes do not have as effective a Confraternity f
program as those whoso CCD parish -unit is organized properly and
correctly-
The CCD Parish Executive Board is a co-operative study-plan-
work group. Its members are the Priest-Director and carefully
selected laymen and laywomen officers and chairmen. The Board_
functions as a team, under the Priest’s guidance; in co-ordinating and
promoting the parish CCD program. The Confraternity will make
progress if in every parish the CCD Executive Board actively leads
in this necessary apestolate.
In the past annual reports, we have never asked for the names
of your Parish CCD Executive Board members. Such information we
are requesting this year, and in the future. A form is enclosed for
this information. The Palish Manual of the CCD has all the Informt-
tlon you may need to revitalize your group. The diocesan office
stands ready to serve you. Call upon them if you need help. ^
In summary let me suggest the following for Catechetical Sunday.
1. Preach a sermon on the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.
A sermon outline is enclosed. Ask your people to pray for the success
of this all-important work.
2. Take up' a special collection for catechetical work. Half of too
collection remains in the parish, and the balance is to oe sent to the
ChanceryXOifibei /^Thls year the diocesan office is sending on ample
supply of" envelopes to every parish, free cf charge.
3. ThSe^fcial collection envelopes,-you will.note, are designed to
serve as forms for recruiting new members. Explain to your people
when you distribute these envelopes this facet of their use.
4. Catechetical Sunday ushers in another year of religious instruc-
tions for the public school children. Redouble your efforts to Increase
attendance especially on the high school level, There are so many
that need to be reached.
5. The text for this year's Discussion Clubs Is called "Ecumenical
Councils," a most interesting book. The use of this text, at a time
when the whole world is anxiously awaiting the new Vatican Courted,
will no doubt help to multiply your parish discussion groups.
Please, dear Father, get behind this important work. We need
your help and you must not refuse it.
God bless you!
Sincerely yours In Christ,
M. S. GARRIGA
