Biafra.
Bishop Swanstrom, whose
organization conducts relief
and development programs
in more than 80 a'Jons,
reported on relief to Liafra
and Nigeria during the
semiannual meeting of the
National Conference of
Catholic Bishops here at
the Astroworld Hotel
April 17.
He said special diocesan
collections amounted to
more than $850,000; foun-
dations had provided
$722,000, and parishes and
private individuals had
raised the remainder.
He said the total value
of aid provided to victims
on both sides of the civil
war is more than $7.5 mil-
lion. The U.S. Government
supplies large quantities of
food, and pays for its
transportation to Nigeria
and Biafra.
Bishop Swanstrom asked
the Bishops to "urge your
people to pray for the
cease-fire that will bring
an end to this dreadful
holocaust while lending us
their support in our efforts
to assuage some of the suf-
fering until the hostilities
come to an end.
"In Biafra today,” he
concluded, "we have a
glowing demonstration of
how we can teach and
preach Christ by word and
deed..

In a box of papers which
I moved ofT my desk sever-
al years ago I found the
beginning of a letter to
Bishop Marx. It was dated
"Easter Monday, 1964,”
and said in part
"Now that I have had a
couple of months to read
the Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy and read
about it, to see what you
bishops put into it and to
guess what we Catholics
are going to get out of it, I
am more envious than ever
of your chance to vote for
it, By your vote, I am con-
vinced, you have helped to
renew Christian life and
give new life to the
Church.”
When I read these sen-
tences within the past few
days, I found myself ask-
ing: If I were writing to-
day, would I say the same
thing? I did a lot of think-
ing before I ventured an
answer.
Looking at the past five
years from the viewpoint
of a priest, I have to admit
that we have accomplished
very much. Most of our
accomplishments are things
which I never really ex-
pected to see in my life-
time.
We celebrate Mass with
our people rather than for
them. We use words they
can understand without
having to look them up in
a translation. We have
simplified many of our cer-
emonies. We have more
variety in our worship,
thanks to our Supplemen-
tary Weekday Lectionary
and our new eucharistic
prayers.
We have many accom-
plishments to show for the
five years we have had the
Constitution on the Sa-
cred Liturgy, things we
so take for granted that
we have to make a con-
scious effort to realize that
five years ago we did not
have them. Nevertheless, a
great part - probably the
far greater part — of what
we began to hope for five
years ago still has to be
realized.
For example, in how
many of our parishes is
there a real sense of com-
munity which makes every
parishioner concerned
about every other member
of his parish? Even in our
Masses, how many partici-
pants so truly unite with
all others who take part
that actually there is only
one act of worship offered
by all who are present in
church?
To how many Catholics
is our public worship "per-
formed by the mystical
body of Jesus Christ," "the
great work wherein God is
perfectly glorified and men

Prayer of Faithful
Fourth Sunday after Easter
4 May, 1969
INTRODUCTION. Today Jesus tells us that every good
gift comes to us from his Father. Through him we
ask his Father for our and all men's needs.
1 - That the Prince of Peace may relax tensions and
end hostilities, we pray to the Lord:
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
2 - That the Spirit of Truth may guide Christ’s Church
in the way of all truth, we pray to the Lord:
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
3 — That the Paraclete may unite all men in confess-
ing one Lord, one faith, one baptism, we pray to the
Lord:
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
4 - That all God’s children may work together to rid
our country of the viciousness of pornography, we
pray to the Lord:
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
5 — (The pastor will insert petitions for needs of his
parish.)
6 — That Christian patience and love may bring about
justice for the poor and the discriminated-against, we
pray to the Lord;
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
7 - That the Faithful Departed, especially ..may
share in the glory of their Risen Savior, we pray to
the Lord;
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!
PRAYER. O God our Father, grant us your faith
and your courage in all that we do. Under your mercy
and your loving care, always keep us close to you. This
we ask through Jesus Christ, your Son, Our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you for ever and ever.
AMEN!

are sanctified” (Const. Art.
7), not just a ritual at
which people are present
as "silent and detached
spectators” while they offer
their private prayers?
How many Catholics are
fully conscience that
"Christ is always present
in his Church, especially
in her liturgical celebra-
tions. He is present in the
sacrifice of the Mass, not
only in the person of his
minister, ... but especially
under the eucharistic spe-
cies. By his power he is
present in the sacraments
...He is present in his
word, since it is he himself
who speaks when the holy
scriptures are read in the
Church. Lastly, he is pres-
ent when the Church prays
and sings ..(Ibid.)?
The conscious unity of
Christians with Christ and
with each other - this
was one of the things that
we hoped for most when
we read the Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy
just after it was published.
Seeing "the bishop ... as
the high priest of his
flock,” being convinced
that "pre-eminent manifes-
tation of the Church con-
sists in the full active par-
ticipation of all God’s holy
people ... in the same
eucharist ... at one altar,
at which there presides the
bishop surrounded by his
college of priests and by
his ministers,” developing
"a sense of community
within the parish, above
all in the common celebra-
tion of the Sunday Mass”
(Ibid., 41. 42) - these
were the immediate tangi-
ble results we hoped for
when we first read the
Constitution those five
years ago.
Have we achieved them?
For the most part I believe
we have not. They are still
results which we must
work for.
Why have we not
achieved them? Because, I
am becoming more and
more convinced, we have
been too concerned about
what we get out of our
liturgy rather than what
we put into it. We have
tended to forget that our
liturgy is the work of man
as well as of the God-man,
and therefore our human
contribution is important.
If I were writing today,
would I write what 1 wrote
five years ago? I believe
that I would. Only, today I
would do it more realisti-
cally and less idealistically.
Today I wou'd stress more
what we have to give to
the liturgy and place less
emphasis on what the lit-
urgy can give to us.
