How .'Long is A Minute?
You^re ^robably saving to yourself-wbat a
silly question! Everyone knows it’s 60 seconds
or l/60th of an hour. But is it as short as
you think?
I’d like to share something I learned this
year at a reading conference. I think it will
prove interesting to you.
Ye were told to close our eyes on the
count of three and not to move, blink, cough,
fidget, etc. We did this, or thought we did,
hut we were told the majority of us (all adults)
failed the test. So, we tried it again, this
time we improved because we were embarrassed.
But. still, we weren’t 190$ perfect. When told
of the timing (I know vou can guess it), we
were stunned I
So what’s mv messa e to you? Just this--
in one day there are 1,449 minutes. If you
take 1 minute in each hour to learn something
new, you can at least learn 969 ideas. I'm
allowing 8 hours sleep time.
I was stimulated to write this letter
after reading the article by Wendy McCorkle
about taking pride in our school.
If each student would take one minute
each day to pick up trash, our campus could be
much more attractive. Some people do judge a
book by it’s cover1
Yes, believe it or not--many of us couldn’t
believe the timing told us--just a. minute!
Winning Isn't
Everything
Know ye that they which
run in a race run all, hut
one receiveth the prize?
So run that ye may obtain.
I Corinthians 9*2!
Winning isn’t everything,
it’s the only thing.
The crisis started in
the early 1960’s. The
Russians had launched Sput-
nik I, and America was in
danger of falling behind
in the space race. Ameri-
ca panicked.
The solution we derived
was two-fold. First, we
needed to teach Jornny bet-
ter mathematics’ so he
could build bigger and bet-
ter rockets.
Second, and most impor-
tant, we had to re~engrain
in our children the ethics
that made this nation great.
First place is the only
thing that matters. Any-
thing less is failure.
Winning is a mystique.
Winners cannot afford to
associate wit.h losers.
The mystique, you under-
stand. Whatever disease
losers have may be contagi-
ous. Winners must be care-
ful not to lose their
mystique.
Our culture perceives
winning as a ritual. Like
a sacred right where God
decides who is worthy of
his favor and who is not.
America is a society of
winners. We have n e v er
lost a war. Vietnam was
just an exhibition that
didn't count in the Lord's
standing. We have sent a
man to the moon while
watching our elderly starve.
We have taught Johnny the
new mathematics while for-
getting to teach him how
to read and write.
I am a fan of all those
children we have confused
with our ethic. Children
’have finished second,
third or last in that race,
but not for lack of effort,
character of God’s grace.
Of the last point I'm
sure because if it’s one
thing we have 1 e a r ned
since the 1960’s it is
winning isn't everything.
Period. Sometimes the
price just isn't worth the
game.
Tnere is nothing in life
so Bweet. as the nectar of
cont. fRom i3T column
success, but there 'is so
much more. There are so
many times when you can be
successful just doing your
best.‘ Sometimes just be-
ing able to play at all
can be a victory in itself.
God must love losers.
After all, he created so
many of us.
