For Senatorship
Special to the Herald
Springfield 111 Jan 5 A majority
of the membeis of the Illinois general
assembly have ai rived in the city in
anticipation of the opening of the
fortysixth session of that body tomor-
row Governor Deneen has completed
his message in readiness for presenta-
tion to the legislature as soon as it
convenes The message is looked for-
ward to with more than oidinary in-
terest The governor it is said will
make numerous recommendations es-
pecially in respect to the management
of the state institutions which have
come in for much criticism dming the
past year Deep waterways is an-
other impoitant subject which will re-
ceive considerable attention in the
message
Interest in the early days of the
session will centerin the electionof
a United States senator to succeed
Albert J Hopkins In the Augus pri-
maries Senator Hopkins was indorsed
for reelection by a majonty vote
Nevertheless the indications are that
he will have to fight it out in the leg
islature as he will not have sufficient
votes to win on first ballot Congiess
man George E Foss is the leading
opponent candidate for the senator
ship Considerable talk is heard of a
dark horse candidate in the event of
a deadlock between the Hopkins and
Foss supporters

POSITIVE CURE FOR INDIGESTION
V
If you Jiave indigestion your food
ferments yn the stomach and bowels
It does more it decays and the nu
tritious matter which should go to
make new blood decays with it and
this leads to an impoverished condi
tion of thp blood to nervousness bil-
iousness constipation sick headache
bad breath which disgusts your
friends andother disagieeable and
unpleasant conditions
And all this tiouble is caused by
the food that doesnt digest but fer-
ments and oftimes rots in the stom-

And fermentation is caused by the
stomach not being strong enough and
energeticenough to thoroughly mix
the food with the digestive juices

Will Probably Raise Gross Earnings
Tax on Railroads From Four
to Five Per Cent
Special to the Herald
St Paul Minn Jan 5 The Mi nne
sota legislature met today and organ
ized for the regular biennial session
Theie is no United States senator to
be chosen this year nor are there any
measures of paramount importance
scheduled for consideration such as
the raihoad rate act passed at the
last session The only important
measure in prospect affecingthe rail-
roads is the proposal to raise the
gross earnings tax on railroads from
4 to 5 per cent There Is also talk
of reviving the measure to place rail
road stock issues under state control
Legislative reapportionment is to be
one of the big problems of the ses-
sion Other questions to be taken up
are an act to prohibit brewers from
owning or controlling saloon licenses
a county option bill for the regula-
tion of the liquor traffic a bill for
the creation of a public utilities com-

primary law to state officers and the
establishment of a system of county

the bottle and the jug
A bottle while suggestive is not
Inherently wicked but a jug Is the
symbol of joyous sin Even the sober-
est souls who frown at the mention of
a bottle smile tolerantly when a jug is
suggested Jugs of many centuries are
assembled in museums and round
them the ethnologist reconstructs ex-
tinct races of men and yet evensci
ence and history strive they never so
sadly can not wholly relieve the jug
of its cheery Insouciance A bottle of
inferior liquor may be dressed forth
enticingly and alluringly named but
theres no disguising the jug Its geni-
al shame can not he hidden There are

No Nature Fake
You certainly run up againstunny
things in the country said the young
man who had just returned from dowu
state where his uncle has a large
farm On the way up to my unc le s
house I had to pass the stock yards
where he kept a lot of pigs As I
passed those hundreds of pigs seemed
to be having a regular staniDede or
panic of some kind they were rush-
ing madly about apparently looking
for something I watched them for
quite a while but could see nothing
but a small woodpecker sitting on the
fence When I got to the house I
asked Uncle Jim what on earth was
the matter with the hogs they seemed
so excited
That so Well It was this way
there was a spell back some weeks
when I had a bad cold lost jny voice
and couldnt call those critters to their
feed so I got the Idea of bringin them
to he troughs by tappln my stick on
the wooden fence and ever since them
pesky woodpeckers came round the
hogs just go crazy thinkin Im callin
them to give them somethin to eat
When Trade Bothers
You certainly do meet some queer
characters when you get out Into tha
country said the New York man
who had just returned from his vaca-
tion About the funniest example of
rural indifference I ever saw though
I struck this summer down in Maine
He ran the only store la the place and
was the postmaster too Most of Ula
stock was covered with dust and fly-
specks and he scarcely everihad any-
thing you wanted One day I asked
him for some of Blankems Whatyou
call which you can buy on every
gtreet corner in New York and practi-
cally everywhere else
Dont keep it he replied without
moving from his chair
Dont keep it I echoed in some
surprise Why youd have lots of calls
for that I should think
Thats just it complained he I
had some and folks kept acomin and

A PHYSICIANS DIAGNOSIS OF
KIDNEY TROUBLE
A Seemingly Common Disease
whlchBecomes Fatal through
Neglect and which May Be
Readily Cured by Prompt At-
tention
More than twojthirds of the annual
death rate physicians claim fs directly
traceable to kidney disorders
Interested by this remarkable asser-
tion and desiring to acquire a better un-
derstanding of the origin of the disease
a prominentphysician was recently in-
terviewed as to the symptoms of such
troubles
To what do you attribute the great
destrucdveness oLkidney diseasey was
T T Jd ifthlhl thse ase gainsjnj
victiiabecome
the bodybefore the s aware
oi his true condition and the rapidity
with which it eatSiits wayinto the vital
organs
Would not the proverbial ounce of
preveation check the progress of the
disease
There is no doubt of it The trouble
is that victims of this disease mistake
the symptoms for some trifling ailment
in the stomach or bowels therefore they
do nothing to arrest the course of the
disease untiLit is well advanced
What is theorigin of kidney trouble
Almost invariably bad digestion fol-
lowed by torpid liver and a constipated
habitWhat
What are the symptoms
Headache dizzy spells sluggish
brain restless bights pale or sallow
skin had breath lack of appetite heart-
burn sour belching backache or tender-
ness over the kidneys nervou9 weak-
ness dark rings around the eyes tired
feeling too much or too little urine and
sediment in urine
ITS EFFECT ON THE HEART
In what way is the heart affected from
kidney trouble
In all cases the heart is disturbed
though in many instances the palpita
tion does not become alarming nntil the
disease has advanced to a serious point
A severe heart throbbing and nervous
trembling is noticeable especially after
a little bodily exercise the victim fre
quently imagines he has heart disease
HOW TO CURE IT
What is the proper course of treat-
ment for kidney disease
First to get rid of uric acid and other
poisons in the system This can be done
by stimulating the bladder and bowels
so that they will act more freely The
suffering kidneys must be strengthened
the liver and stomach toned up and the
digestion improved
Prickly Ash Bitters is a remedy that
answers these requirements completely
It is not only a system tonic and regu-
lator but its healing and restorative in-
fluence will build up the weakened kid-
neys and urge them to a better perform-
ance of their duties It gives strength
and tone to the liver stomach andheart
and promotes harmony of action through-
out the body
