A FINAL MESSAGE FROM GENERAL WEBER
As you know, I'll be leaving TxDOT at the end of December, so this will be my final
column as your executive director. For almost two years, I've had the pleasure of serving
alongside you in delivering the best transportation system in the country to the people
of Texas.
It's been a wonderful opportunity for me, made even better because of your
professionalism, character and work ethic. You truly are the best this state has to offer,
and you should be proud of what you do for Texas. When I look back over my tenure here
and all that you've accomplished, it makes me extremely proud and grateful to have been
a part of it all.
When storms hammered parts of Texas last May, you were there immediately to help.
More than 480 employees from around the state marshalled together to close flooded
roads, reroute traffic, clear debris and assess damage to roads and bridges before and after
the storms hit. You helped your neighbors stay connected to their homes, their families
and their livelihoods.
When Texas roads in the energy sector took a pounding from continuous heavy truck
traffic, you went to work above and beyond to make those roads safe again. You mobilized
equipment, resources and people power from around the state, and those roads are now
passable again.
You earned the confidence of Texans with your work on getting Proposition 1
projects let and constructed. By the end of the year, more than $2 billion in projects will
finally get off the planning shelves. Don't miss the point. In just nine months, you went
from initial acquisition of resources to contracting billions of dollars in
additional projects.
You've won national awards, compiled the best safety records in
the department's history, pushed out major initiatives like FNAV
and PeopleSoft, made major progress on the 1-35 corridor in
Central Texas, built congestion-busting projects in the Metroplex,
expanded statewide maintenance operations and that's just some
of your many accomplishments.
During my time with TxDOT, I've met some incredibly
talented and hardworking people. In my former occupation,
I commanded soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines
in some of the world's most challenging
environments and conditions. I saw them
selflessly give their very best in the most
difficult of situations. I know honor,
courage and commitment when I see
it, and I saw it every day in all of you at
TxDOT. I am abetter public servant and a
better person because of what I observed
and learned from you. Thank you for
letting me be a part of your family!
God bless you, your families and our
great state of Texas.
