The Historical Museum of the Texas Republic
Curator of Education to Retire after 18 Years
Anne McGaugh, the museum's Curator of
Education, has announced her retirement,
effective August 31. She began working
at the museum as an Assistant Curator of
Education in 1998. At that time, the museum
was undergoing a major renovation and she
managed the million dollar fundraising effort
as the Millennium Campaign Coordinator. In
2002 she became the Curator of Education,
and the museum's educational offerings have
expanded greatly under her guidance.
"My goal for the museum has been to always
have something for everyone," McGaugh
said. "One of the things I am most proud of is
the introduction of the Brazos Valley Regional
History Fair to our local school children."
This program allows local students to
compete on a national level through National
History Day. Over the years, several students
from the Brazos Valley have been ranked
nationally. Anne has served as the Regional
Coordinator for the contest for eleven years,and has been responsible for fundraising;
recruiting and training participants, including
students, teachers, sponsors, judges and
volunteers; scheduling; and organizing the
awards ceremony.
Anne graduated from Trinity University with a
BA in Elementary Education. She earned an
MEd in Curriculum and instruction from Texas
A&M University. She also graduated from the
Winedale Museum Seminar sponsored by the
Texas Historical Commission. She has taught
in both public and private elementary schools,
as well as in the College of Education at Texas
A&M University. She is a professional member
of the American Alliance of Museums and
the Texas Association of Museums. She has
presented numerous sessions at the Texas
Association of Museum's annual conferences,
and has presented at conferences for the Texas
State Historical Association, Texas Council for
the Social Studies, and State Bar of Texas Law
