GOALS IN LIFE
As organizations get bigger and jobs more specialized, a
sense of purpose for the individual is more easily lost. Comment-
ing on this, Mr. T. B. Jefferson, publisher of the Welding Engi-
neer, says, “One of the tragedies of our times is the fact that so
many people do not have an overriding purpose, a life ambition
or a goal in what they are presently doing,. Have you noticed how
little enthusiasm some people display for their work? ‘It’s a job.’
‘It’s something to do.’ ‘It makes me a living.’ These seem to be
their attitudes. What a terrible approach to a job....We are told
that 5 per cent of the people in the U. S. will provide the leader-
ship for the coming generation. Those leaders will come from
people who have ambitions and goals in life. Do you?
One of the most worthwhile goals which anyone can have is
to excel in whatever job he does. Aside from personal satisfaction
and almost inevitable monetary reward, there is another return
whose value is virtually incalculable. Doing a job and doing it
well can be its own goal, and it can be a vital influence in mak-
ing effective concerned citizens out of the younger generation,
part of which you are probably raising in your own home.

A FITTING EPITAPH
In August, 1968, the general price level was 4.3 per cent
higher than in August, 1967. This together with higher taxes has
meant that wage increases gained by millions of working people
this year have been more than wiped out and that millions more
of our citizens unable to increase their income are feeling to a
sharper degree the pinch of inflation.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that for 1968 as a
whole inflation will take prices up by 4 per cent or more. This is
part of the price of a $25 billion deficit in the federal budget.
Under these conditions, new proposals for enlarging programs of
federal welfare spending strike a jarring note.
Unless the new Administration can bring federal spending
down to a level that the taxpayers can support, the devaluation
of the U.S. dollar will continue to destroy the savings and invest-
ments of all of us, and government benefits paid in evermore
worthless dollars will provide a fitting epitaph for political op-
portunism.

ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES
“Seek first his kingdom.”
There is no place for a partly
committed person in the king-
dom .There is no such thing as a
half-Christian; no one is half-
saved; no one’s sins are half-
forgiven. Only the fully com-
mitted are eligible for the King-
dom of God.
There are those who will not
accept God’s invitation, because
they have bought a field or a
yoke of oxen, or they have just
married.” (Cf. Luke 14:18-20.)
They are preoccupied with other
things. To these Jesus said,
“Seek first (God’s) kingdom----
and all these things shall be
yours as well.” The kingdom of
God is so important that it must
have first place in one’s life or
it has no place at all. You can-
not serve God and mammon”
(Matt. 6:24).
No merely nominal Christian
will enter the kingdom of God.
To go to church is not enough.

To have your name on the
church roll doesn’t make you
eligible. Sending a check, even
a large one, will not buy your
way in. Religion in your wife’s
name is no passport. Position or
property or ancestry hold no
preference in God’s kingdom.
Only those who do the will of
God can expect to enter.
