VOLUME IV HOWE, GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS, THURSDAY, MAY 30, 1968 NUMBER 47
YOUTH, BOYS7 LEAGUE BASEBALL
ACTION TO START NEXT WEEK

THAT
?
John Clift authored a feature
story in the Denison Herald last
Sunday relating to the capture
of Raymond Hamilton here in
Howe in the early 30’s. Hamil-
ton, a running mate of Clyde
Barrow and Bonnie Parker, had
robbed a bank in Lewisville a
couple of hours prior to his cap-
ture, so the story goes.
Alton Sollis told us over a cup
of coffee this week that Hamil-
ton and a buddy were seen to
pass through Howe going north
in a. Plymouth sedan. (Accord-
ing to Hamilton after his cap-
ture, people lined streets of all
the towns they passed through
to watch the action). Alton says
he and a couple more young
sters jumped_in a car and gave
chase, although they actually
didn’t even know who they were
chasing. The Plymouth neared
the underpass formerly crossing
U.S. 75 in the north part of
Howe, and, seeing a couple of
bars parked nearby, thought the
underpass was blocked by po-
lice. Hamilton made a U-Turn
and headed back south, only to
be stopped near the building
formerly occupied by Happy’s
Cafe, where he was captured by
'a Sherman group, including Col-
lier Yeury and Roy McDaniel,
Sheriff’s deputies.
Hamilton was executed later.
We remember a few years a-
go, Raymond’s brother, Floyd,
was brought to Montague Coun-
ty from the state penitentiary
to be tried for robbery of a
drug store in Ringgold. He was
due for parole, and the trip to
Montague cost him a few more
years in the pokey.
Saturday is voting day again
in Howe, as well as throughout
the state. Balloting is expected
to be light, although voters will
choose the next governor.
In case you Haven’t heard —
candidates are Don Yarborough
and Preston Smith.
Also, in case you’ve forgotten*
Thursday is Memorial Day, a
legal holiday. Howe State Bank
will be closed, as will a few
other businesses. Grocery stor-
es and service stations plan to
remain open.
A survey of merchants, uif de-
termine if at least a couple of
holidays per year could be ob-
served by closing, would be a
good project for the Chamber
of Commerce, if more than two
or three ever attended a meet-
ing at the same time.
Library Here To Be
Open Two Days
Each Week-Title I
Howe school library will be
open two days each week for
students to check out books or
to come to the library for study
or reading, Mrs. C. L. Pool an-
nounced this week. The opening
of the library during the sum-
mer months is made possible
through the Title I Cooperative
Program, which operates from
the office of the County Superin-
tendent, Mrs. Pool said.
The elementary library will
be open on Tuesdays and Wed-
nesdays, beginning June 4, from
8 a.m. until 11 and 1 to 4 p.m.
If a need develops, arrange-
ments will be made to open the
high school library part of this
time. The summer library pro-
gram will be directed by Mrs.
Earl King.

Transportation
Study Approved
For This County
AUSTIN—The Texas Highway
Commission this week approved
an urban transportation study
for the Sherman-Denison area
of Grayson County.
A special census was conduct-
ed recently which determined
that the area now comes under
the terms of the Federal-Aid
Highway Act of 1962.
This act provides that there
will be no federal participation
in highway projects in an area
with more than 50 thousand pop-
ulation unless the projects are
based on continuing comprehen-
sive transportation planning.
The study will include Sher-
man, Denison, and the area sur-
rounding the two cities which is
expected to be urban in charac-
ter by 1990.
The urgency of highway im-
provements was highlighted at'a
Monday night meeting of the
Metropolitan Area Regional
Planning Commission with an
announcement that the state and
federal governments would bear
all the costs of an urban trans-
portation study that is to be
completed as soon as possible.
Initial plans called for the coun-
ty to furnish a portion of the
cost for the study.
The planning program is re-
quired for the recently created
Metropolitan Area before fed-
eral funds can be secured for
any new highway projects.
Cost of the study is estimated
at $140,000, with the local gov-
ernments share set at about $21-
000 before it was learned that
the entire cost would be handled
by state and federal govern-
ments.
The Sherman-Denison area is
the 24th metropolitan area in
Texas which will be covered by
urban transportation studies.

Suffer? Broken Arm,
Twice Within Year
Butch Thornhill, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Leon Thornhill, suf-
fered a broken left arm last
week during a football practice
session.
Butch broke the right arm at
the beginning of school last year
in an accident at his home, and
ended his freshman year this
week — also with an arm in a
cast. The cast will be removed
in about six weeks. *
