The fifth and sixth grade students at Central Catholic Elementary, Cor-
pus Christi, followed the 1988 Summer Olympics through their
studies of world geography. Carmen Colmenero, Tony Tijerina and
Charly Collins have helped to post the countries on the map and find
their location. The students followed the events through their reading
of the daily newspaper and have added to their knowledge by drawing
maps and studying the countries in the encyclopedia.

Texas Catholic Conference Assembly
meets in Austin Sept. 26-28
By Brother Richard Daly
Texas Catholic Conference
AUSTIN—The 21st General
Assembly of the Texas Catholic Con-
ference (TCC) was held here Sept.
26-28. The theme for this year's
assembly was evangelization in Texas.
Church officials from the Diocese of
Corpus Christi who attended the TCC
were Dr. Rosemarie Kamke, director
of the Educational Apostolate; Deacon
Roy Grassedonio, chancellor; Msgr.
Leonard Pivonka, judicial vicar and
episcopal vicar for the Diocesan
Synod; Sister M. Martha O’Gara,
superior of the Incarnate Word and
Blessed Sacrament Sisters; Frank
Lucido, director of religious education
and Msgr. Robert Freeman, episcopal
vicar for Social Communications and
Services.
Bishop Michael Sheehan of Lub-
bock delivered the keynote address en-
tided, “Catholic Evangelization in
Texas: Can We Overcome the
Lethargy?” Bishop Sheehan challeng-
ed the 225 assembled delegates and
observers to be more enthusiastic
about their faith.
Using fictitious examples of a
Hispanic family and an upwardly
mobile young Anglo woman, the
bishop illustrated what sometimes hap-
pens to Catholics when they move into
new surroundings where the Catholic
parish community is not a welcoming
group.
The other major address was
delivered by Father Don Neumann,
pastor of St. Pius X Church in
Pasadena, and was entitled,
“Evangelization in a Parish Setting.”
Father Neumann covered a wide
variety of issues and dealt with con-
crete “nuts and bolts” ways for
parishes to be evangelizing com-
munities.
Both addresses were followed by
question and answer periods where
delegates were able to express their
views on the topic of evangelization
and the talks that were given.
At a third plenary session, a panel
moderated by Bishop John McCarthy
of Austin and including the Bishops’
Ad Hoc Committee on Evangelization
(with Bishops Charles Grahmann of
Victoria, Michael Sheehan of Lub-
bock, Michael Pfeifer of San Angelo,
and Father Bruce Nieli of the Texas
Catholic Conference), continued to
explore the topic of evangelization.
Also on the panel were Charolette,
director of Black Ministry for the
Diocese of Galveston-Houston, and
Sister Ruthanne Reed, OP, of the
Dominican Preaching Team in the
Diocese of Brownsville.
During the annual assembly ban-
quet, awards were presented to
Johnny and Susie Ojeda who work in
the Volunteers for Educational and
Social Services (VESS) program of the
TCC at Cristo Rey parish in Austin.
Also honored by VESS was Ann
Schwendinger, who has served as con-
sultant to VESS for five years.
A special award was given to the
Catholic Foundation of Dallas,
represented by Philip Awad for the
foundation’s continued support of
VESS.
Two unexpected awards were
bestowed by the TCC. Father Larry
Stuebben of the Archdiocese of San
Antonio was honored for his work in
coordinating the papal visit last year
and Margaret Theisen, who is retiring
as director of VESS, was commended
for her leadership of that organization
since 1985.
During the business session of the
assembly, Mrs. Davis was reelected
president; Hector Rodriguez of
Brownsville, vice president; and Ed-
ward Doherty of Fort Worth,
secretary, for next year’s assembly.
Two resolutions were passed; one
dealing with restructuring of the Texas
Catholic Conference and the other,
noting that July 14, 1989, will mark
the 25th anniversary of the conference.
The theme and exact date for next
year's assembly will be determined by
the TCC Board of Directors, which
will meet on Oct. 25 in San Antonio.
