Very Rev. Thomas L. Meany, relieved of his assignments
as diocesan director of the Permanent Diaconate Program,
diocesan director of the Office of Ministry, and of his title: of-

pointed judicial vicar for the Diocesan Tribunal and diocesan

CORPUS CHRISTI—Sis-
ter Martha O’Gara, principal
of Incarnate Word Academy,
was elected superio' general of
the Sisters of the Incarnate
Word and Blessed Sacrament
Dec. 21 at the Incarnate Word
Motherhouse here.
She succeeds Sister Martha
Ann Snapka, who has served
two four-year terms and will
become the congregation’s first
councilor. Sister O’Gara
assumes her new office in June.
Sister O’Gara, a native of
Sligo, Ireland, entered the con-
gregation July 2, 1949. She is a
graduate of Incarnate Word
Academy and holds a
bachelor’s degree from St. Ed-
ward’s University in Austin
and a mastei ’s degree with cer-
tification in school administra-
tion from Texas A&I Universi-
ty in Kingsville.
She has taught school in Vat-
tman, Brownsville, Kingsville
and Corpus Christi, and has
served as councilor in the
general administration of the
Sisters for the past eight years.
There will be no changes in
policy when she begins her term
as - r general, she said at
a Terence following the
eit<:*i ..is.
“It i i an honor and a call and
a challenge to be elected by my
community to this position,”
she said. “I will continue the
journey our mother foundress
began. It will be a continuation
of the journey which ail of us
are traveling.”
Other Sisters elected to the
general administration are
Sister Snapka, first councilor

Annette Wagner, second coun-
cilor; Sister Kathleen
McDonagh, third councilor,
and Sister Anna Marie
Espinosa, fourth councilor.

Sister Martha O’Gara
The Sisters of the Incarnate
Word and Blessed Sacrament
were founded in Lyons,
France, in 1625. Four Sisters
came to Brownsville in 1852 at
the request of Bishop Jean
Marie Odin. In 1871 four
Sisters came to Corpus Christi
and opened Incarnate Word
Academy, a school for young
girls.

Laredo kids get their
kicks with soccer

LAREDO — Laredo
youngsters are getting their
kicks this winter.
Thanks to San Martin de
Porres and St. Patrick chur-
ches.
The two Laredo parishes
sponsor soccer leagues.
St. Patrick’s is starring its
seventh year of operation.
The original organizer, St.
Patrick’® parishioner John
McKeovm played college soc-
cer at the Naval Academy.
The St. Pat league starts
Jan. 7. It has 14 teams this
year and ilmost 300 boys and
girls. The circuit has four
divisions starting with 6 year
olds. Games are played on
Saturday all day and Sunday
afternoon at one site.
San Martin de Porres
League started its fourth year
in December. It now has 16
teams in three divisions-—6-8,
9-11 and 12-14. It involves
325 boys and girls.
