CORPUS CHRISTI—In their first
year of submitting entries in the annual
contest, Jeanne Phillips and Javier Col-
menero of the Catholic Telecommunica-
tions Center (CTC) received two awards
from the Corpus Christi Press Club for
two of their stories.
The awards, divided into the
categories of television, print media and
public relations, were presented at the
club’s annual banquet April 27 at the
Marriott Hotel.
Ms. Phillips and Colmenero were
unable to attend the banquet because
they were in San Antonio covering the
Regional Tercer Encuentro.
The two, both of whom have been
working for the CTC over two years,
won first place in the features category
for a story entitled “Bird Lady,” about
a woman who operates, Bonopart’s
Retreat, a sanctuary for sick and injured
birds.
They also placed second in the
gereral news category for a story about
Casa Oscar Romero, a refugee half-way
house in San Benito run by Jack Elder,
Both pieces appeared as local
segments of the nationally syndicated
program, Real to Reel. Ms. Phillips is
the local producer and Colmenero is the
photographer—both share editing re-
sponsibilities. CTC director is Incar-
nate Word and Blessed Sacrament Sister
Janie Barrera.
In an interview last week, both Ms.
Phillips and Colmenero said they were
surprised and pleased with the awards.
“I think it’s really neat to be
rccognired by your peers,” commented
Ms, Phillips, “Where we work, you
don’t think of yourself as competing
with the TV’ news stations, but the
topics we rover often are the .same,”
“I was somewhat surprised knowing
we are a religious and non-profit pro-
duction center,” Colmenero added.
Ms. Phillips and Colmenero, who
previously worked together in the news
department at Channel 6, cited the
“creative freedom” they have as
definite advantages in their jabs.
“7'here is no fear to experiment,”
said Ms. Phillips. “We are encouraged
not to just fit into the format-style, but
to really reach beyond ourselves to
create something new. It takes courage
to do that and 1 think wr all have it.”
She added she is proud the CTC is
becoming more well-known tor the
quality of its programming and sees it as
an “addition to the television market in
Corpus Christi.”
And not only are they receiving more
local recognition, but nationally as well.
Thirteen ofColmenero's Encuentro pro-
grams will be aired throughout the
country by the Catholic Television Net-
work of America.
St. Philip’s youth, Baptists,
share their faith, fellowship
CORPUS CHRISTI — In a spirit of
ecumenism, youth tcom St. Philip the
Apostle Catholic Church and First Bap-
tist Church shared two evenings of
fellowship, learning about each other’s
faith.
On April 28, members of St. Philip’s
youth group, led by Sue Hart, visited
First Baptist Church on Ocean Drive.
Dr. V.O. Elmore, pastor, discussed
basics aspects of the Baptist religion and
answered questions by the young peo-
ple. They then attended a service that
evening with the Baptist congregation.
The following Sunday, about 25 Bap-
tist youth with four adults visited the
Corpus Christi Minor Seminary where
St. Philip’s parishioners meet.
Father Leonard Pivonka discussed
basic beliefs of Catholics, including the
sacraments, the saints, devotion to the
Virgin Mary and purgatory.
The whole group then attended a
special Mass in the chapel, as Father
Pivonka explained the parts of the
ceremony and much of the accompany-
ing symbolism.
Many of the youth then went bowl-
ing, with plans to continue in the spirit
they helped create.
Father Leonard Pivonka, pastor of St. Philip the Apostle Church, Corpus
Christi, explains some of the basic tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.
