Low-cost spay and neuter
program offered
CORPUS CHRISTI-Presently CorpusChristi's Animal
Control is destroying over 2,000cats and dogs each month.
In May 1,611 cats and dogs were impounded and only 11
were adopted from Animal Control. The number of ani-
mals put to death escalates every year and is the direct
result of overbreeding.
The Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Program, sponsored by
Compassion for Animals, is a Texas non-profit corpora -
tion and cooperates with certain area veterinarians to offer
spaying and neutering at one-third of the normal charge.
Participants must qualify for the program based on their
income. Those interested in having tlieir pets fixed, or in
donating to this program, should call 852-6573.

Spofon Hospital hosts
critical care conference
CORPUS CHRISTl-Spohn Hospital will host its Sixth
Annual Critical Care Conference on Aug. 22 and 23. The
theme for this year’sconyentioiiis“1991:TheWaveofthe
Future.” This two day conference for health care profes-
sionals is designed to focus on enhancing their clinical
knowledge, practice and skills as well as learning the
importance of integrating humor into nursing practice. At
the end of this conference, the participants should be able
to identify current and future practices that will challenge
the critical care nurse. Also, they would be able to discuss
current and future clinical concepts and their application
to the care of the critically ill patient. Finally, they should
be able to recognize and apply the concepts of humor in
nursing practice and demonstrate increased skill in chosen
interactive sessions.

Back-to-school supply drive
CORPUS CHRIST1-A back-to-school supply drive has
been organized to provide school supplies for needy
children in theCoastal Bend area. Thedrive, organized by
United Way, the Corpus Christi Boys and Girls Club, toe
Labor Council and the Boy Scouts of America, Gulf Coast
Council, will continue until September. Approximately
38,000 children in 21 school districts will need donated
school supplies for back-to-school needs.
Those wanting to participate in the drive, can take school
supplies to schools and school district offices all over the
Coastal Bend. On Saturday, Aug. 17, Scouts will, be
stationed in front of Sam’s Wholesale Club, 4949 Green-
wood, and several stores to collect donated items. Also on
the 17th, donations will be accepted at the Boys and Girls
Clubs in Corpus Christi, Alice and Kingsville.
The supplies needed are: glue (no paste), boxes of 8
crayons, #2 pencils, blue or black ball-point pens, writing
tablets, notebook paper (wide ruled), safety scissors, felt-
tipped markers, colored pencils, folders, spiral notebooks
and rulers.
Students in need of assistance with school supplies
should contact their school district office.

Organ recital
LAREDO—Aifonso Vega-Nunez, Titular Organist at
iheCatedralde Morelia, Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico will
be performing an Organ Recital at Blessed Sacrament
Church in Laredo on Monday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
For the past 24 years, Dr. Vega-Nunez has organized an
International Festival of Organists that perform in the
Caiedrai in Morelia.There is no charge for the recital.

Young adult retreat
CORPUS CHRISTI-The Youth/Young Adult Office is
sponsoring a fall Young Adult reureat/gathering for ages
18-35. The retreat will be held Sept. 13-15 at the Diocesan
Pastoral Center (Youth Center), 1200 Lantana and will
begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and end at 12 noon on Sunday.
Participants may corns to all orpart of the retreat. Married
young adults are welcome. Registration fee is S15 per

Youth Ministry workshop
CC RPUS CHRISTI/LAREDO-Adults who are pres-
ent’ / working with teenagers in a parish or school setting,
or who may be interested in working with youth are invited

area of youth ministry.
