The importance of the National Shrine of the Im-
maculate Conception in Washington, D.C. for the
whole Church in the United States increases with
each passing year. It was the decision of the first
bishop of the United States, Archbishop John Car-
roll of Baltimore and the Council of Baltimore, to
place our young nation under the patronage of our
Blessed Mother under ttie title of the Immaculate
Conception. Subsequently devotion in the United
States to our Blessed Mother under her title of the
Immaculate Conception increased so remarkably
that the bishops of the United States earlier in this
century decided to construct a great Basilica in our
National Capitol dedicated in honor of the Im-
maculate Conception. Now that the construction of
this great Shrine Basilica has been substantiallv ac-
complished, it has become a place of pilgrimage for
hundreds of thousands of Catholics each year.
Sometime in 1985 it is my hope to lead a diocesan
pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Immaculate Concep-
tion.
It is now our custom to take up a collection each
year on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
The entire proceeds of this annual collection arc
sent to the shrine to help defray the considerable ex-
pense of monitoring the shrine. This year, because I
have dispensed all Catholics in the Diocese of Cor-
pus Christi from the obligation of assisting at Mass
on Saturday, December 8, the Feast of the Im-
maculate Conception, I am asking that a second col-
lection be taken up in all of the churches and chapels
of the diocese at the Sunday liturgy next weekend.
December 8 and 9, for the Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception. 1 ask you to be generous and give to
this beautiful and important symbol of our devotion
to our Blessed Mother and our trust in her protec-
tion for the Catholic Church in the United States.
Yours in Christ,
