Welch ends 30 year UD career
By Matt Grantham
Assistant News Editor
History professor June
Welch, loved by both faculty and
students, has retired because of
health concerns and family mat-
ters.
He was a full-time histo-
ry professor for over thirty years.
His career at the University will be
remembered by his ability to re-
late to students both inside and
outside the classroom. “For a lot
of freshmen, he was the personifi-
cation of UD,” History professor
Francis Swietek said.
“I always liked how he re-
garded the students as his friends.
Welch brought an affable, easy-
going style to every lecture and his
stories were legendary. ” senior
Richard Nolen said.
In addition to teaching
his renowned American Civiliza-
tion courses, Welch also made
many contributions to the study
of Texas history. Provost Glen
Thurow called Welch “one of the
most pre-eminent Texas histori-
ans.”
His many accomplish-
ments include writing over a doz-
en books and narrating the long-
running radio series “Vignettes of
Texas History.” During his teach-
ing career, he has earned many
awards; including the Outstand-
ing Faculty Member and the Good
Guy Award. Additionally, he has
served as History Department
Chairman for over ten years and
was also Academic Dean from
1967 until 1969.
Before teaching, he
played football for Texas Christian
University. He was in both the
Army and in the Air Force Re-
serve, where he attained the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel.

Microsoft to help install new technology
By Lisa Makson
News Editor
Technological elitism will
no longer hamper UD students fro
using computers anymore thanks
to a new educational partnership
with Microsoft.
After perusing UD’s tech-
nological vision plan this past sum-
mer, Microsoft liked what it saw.
Through their Community In-
volvement Fund that helps to ad-
vance education, Microsoft agreed
to help bring UD’s computing ca-
pabilities into the 21st century.
“Our goal is to have UD become a
multimedia rich environment us-
ing the latest technology.” Aca-
demic Computing Director Sean
Malone said.
The new partnership was
christened with the installation of
new fiber optic line which have
linked together the entire campus
to the infamous ACAD computer
system. This means easy access to
ACAD from any computer on cam-
pus.
“Our goal is to have a
foundation of software and hard-
ware, like Microsoft’s donated Win
NT and Win NTServer software,
which will become UD’s operating
system. In other words, it’ll make
‘em go. Then, we’ll move into spe-
cialized software to meet staff
needs,” Malone said.
New programs like Office
97 and special programming math
majors, like Microsoft’s Visual C++
and
J++ will soon be added. In mid-
October webpage design will be all
the rage since students will be able
to use design their own webpages
as easy as one, two, three with Mi-
crosoft’s FrontPage web designer
program. In addition to these soft-
ware gains, less literate computer
students will have a new on-cam-
pus resource. Student workers will
man phones in a new war room
where “lab assistants can give ac-
tual modern technichal support to
students from here.” Malone said.
On the horizon students
can expect remodeling of yet an-
other
computer lab, the addition of more
pcs and new summer hours.
