The Harper News
February 27, 2004
In the darkest hours of t fie nig fit
We wafk by faith ana not by sight
Of we had never gone through the fain
We woufd never ayyreciate the rain.
‘if we had never taken a chance-
‘Then we woufd miss out on fife's great-
est dance.
if we had never suffered or cried—
We woufdn’t understand why our foved
ones died
Live on, my friend
‘And ride with the wind.
'Be fike the oak tree, and hendl
Because this fife is not the end.

through math problems,
think about how to write
stories, and correct gram-
matical errors on their
essays. Sometimes they
lead kindergarten classes
during Show and Tell.
The volunteers
almost always receive
more back than they give.
As they walk through the
school or around the com-
munity, students run up to
them an give them hugs.
Many times stu-
dents just need an addi-
tional person to listen to
them read and to encour-
age them and to practice
with them as students may
not have time or help at
home or may simply need
extra assistance.
Harper Elementary
Mentoring program has
been in place for the last
three years and now has a
total of six mentors.
To sign up is easy.
Each volunteer is asked to
fill out an application and
to meet with Principal Jay
Harper for an interview.
Mr. Harper determines if
the applicant has had rele-
vant experience with chil-
dren and discusses ways
the volunteer might be of
help. A second require-
ment is to run a criminal
background check on the
volunteer which ensures
the safety of the students.
After references
are checked Mr. Harper
and the volunteer deter-
mine the hours available
for volunteering and let
the teachers request the
volunteer s services.
All of the present
mentors now work with
elementary students on a
variety of tasks in lots of
different settings.
To volunteer call
the school office at 864-
4044 and make an
appointment with Mr.
Harper.
As the axiom says,
t takes a village to raise
children.

Above, Mr. Gene Ake (center) works with fourth
graders Donald Williams (left) and Clay Graham
(right) by listening to them read and correcting
their compositions. Below, Mrs Ake works with
Maria Guevara, to polish her essay. These stu-
dents are in Mrs. Townsend s class.
Harper Elementary
School is very proud to
have several volunteers or
mentors who come to
school every week and
work with children.
Some like Mr. and
Mrs. Ake work with class
groups or with individual
children. Others tutor
individual children.
Most volunteers
come once a week and stay
from two hours to all day.
Mentors read with chil-
dren, help them work
