Christmas Concert offered by the
Fredericksburg Chorale
The Dec. 5 Christmas
Concert of the Fredericks-
burg Chorale features
beginnings, impossible to
imagine, and comprehend-
ed only once they are seen.
The first half of the
Christmas concert will be
part one of Haydn’s orato-
rio, The Creation. Haydn,
upon visiting London, heard
for the first time Handel’s
Messiah and was inspired to
write his own oratorio or
unstaged drama. Haydn
chose the story of creation
from Genesis as his inspira-
tion.
As we celebrate the
birth of Christ, Haydn’s
music celebrates the birth
of the universe, the first
creation of which was light.
The connection with
Christmas is, of course, the
birth of the Light of the
World. Haydn used as text
German translations of the
scripture and John Milton.
The Chorale will sing the
oratorio in English, in an
approved version by Haydn.
After all, English is the origi-
nal language of the King
James Version and of Milton.
“In the beginning....”
These are the first words of
Scripture and the first
words of John’s Gospel. The
second half of the Choral’s
Christmas concert is based
on the first fourteen verses
of the Gospel of John and
will feature new composi-
tions by Mark Hierholzer,
arrangements of ancient
carols also by Hierholzer,
and the robust singing of
traditional carols by every-
one in the house. Even
instruments will join in to
celebrate the Word becom-
ing flesh, the Light of the
world being made manifest
in the life of a man.
Our 330and 7:00 p.m.
concerts at St. Joseph’s
Halle on December 5 will
celebrate the Spirit being
made material, Light
becoming substance, as we
know now that it is, and the
opening of our eyes each
day, each moment, to a new
and fresh universe, one that
the darkness cannot com-
prehend.
Fredericksburg Choral’s
Christmas Concert comes
early in December in order
to instill the joyful spirit of
the season into all concert
participants.

Chorale on Saturday,

Following Jesus • Encouraging People • Serving Community
Jerry and Jeanette have been married 25 years in July. They have five
grown children, 10 grandchildren and their little dog, Spiffy. They pas-
tored 81/2 years in three churches: Lafayette, Oregon, Nyssa, Oregon and
Olympia, Washington. Jerry brings a simple combination of the Word of
God and inspirational humor to services across the nation. He has writ-
ten his first book, geared toward seekers and new converts to Christianity
titled, “Hey God, There is a Bug in My Pew.” He is currently writing the
second, “Hey God, I am Stuck in a Rut.”
Jeanette enjoys greeting the people and prays over needs of the saints
working along side her husband. Her motto is to touch every hand that
comes through the church doors.
Together they have a heart to turn people to Jesus,
to encourage the ministers they meet
and to draw congregations to a closer walk with Christ

Readings
Wisdom 1:1 -7
Ps.139
Luke 17:1 -6
Living Wisdom
Today all three readings
teach about wisdom; ‘the
Spirit of the Lord that fills
the whole world’— a gift to
which we should be atten-
tive. The Psalm reminds that
the Lord searches and
knows every purpose and
activity of our life. Of this we
cannot be afraid, but rejoice
in the fact He watches over
us with such love.
The Gospel returns to
the fruit of wisdom - for-
giveness - both that which
we receive from God, and
the forgiveness we give to
others. There is no other
way we can live the Word of
Jesus.

Lukdl 3:1 -9
fni Scott jfofmann. Minister. St James Lutheran Church
Why do we keep asking why bad things happen to good
people? Because bad things keep happening to good peo-
ple!
In this text from Luke, Jesus rejects the idea that God
was punishing the Galileans who suffered under Pilate.
Jesus is confronted by those who asked him the “why”
question. His answer doesn’t answer the “why” question.
The “why” question can’t be answered.
His answer does redirect them to focus on what to do
next. He doesn’t ask them about someone else’s past
(which would be making a judgment call) but he redirects
their attention to their own future. Rather than worrying
about what happened to someone else, Jesus asks them to
consider what they are going to be doing with and in their
own lives.
In a world where bad things continue to happen to good
people, in THIS world where we are called to walk in the
footsteps of Jesus, we would be better off to keep from
judging others and focus instead on bringing healing and
making the world a better place, a little at a time, one day
at a time, one person at a time.
Rather than being captured by fear, we can be released
by faith. Could this be what repentance is ail about?
