Hill Country Gardeners Celebrate
Tenth Birthday
Hill Country Master
Gardeners celebrate ten
years of learning and shar-
ing gardening knowledge
this month.
When the term “Master
Gardener” was first coined
in the early 1970s to
describe a new Extension
program in Washington
State, few could have pre-
dicted it would spread into
Texas and blossom into one
of the most effective volun-
teer organizations in the
state. Texas now boasts
more than 6,400 Master
Gardeners.
“Locally, we’ve graduated
10 classes bringing our total
membership to 110”, said
Chris Seifert, Hill Country
Master Gardeners presi-
dent. “Our group includes
members from Kerr,
Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall,
Medina and Real Counties.”
The Texas Master
Gardener program had its
beginnings in 1978 at Texas
A&M University.
Administered through the
Texas AgriLife Extension
Service, the program trains
individuals through an
intensive 17-week course.
Interns must contribute 50
hours of community service
during the year to become
certified, then volunteer 25
hours plus 6 educational
hours to remain certified.
• Gardening questions are
answered by phone (830)
257-6568, e-mail
kerr@aa.tamu.edu. or by
visiting the website at
www.hillcountrvmasteraar-
deners.ora.
• The group built a green-
house supervised by Vickie
Killeen and Anne Brown to
maintain plants for sale at
Kerr County Market Days.
• Under the direction of
Brown, 55-gallon rain bar-
rels are built and sold, with
proceeds funding scholar-
ships for university horticul-
tural students.
• Fay Drozd is liaison with
Kerr County Sheriff W.R.
“Rusty” Hierholzer for a
vegetable garden main-
tained by county jail
inmates.
• David and Dorothy Buchen
coordinate work at a gar-
den at the Texas AgriLife
office demonstrating the
beauty and common sense
of using drought-resistant
landscapes.
• In Fredericksburg, Master
Gardeners have helped
establish gardens at Pioneer
Museum, Good Samaritan
Center and Dr John Lipe
Memorial Garden.
• Thriving Junior Master
Gardener programs operate
at Hunt. Boerne, Bandera,
and Medina where kids
plant and harvest vegeta-
bles.
• Master Gardeners are
available for free presenta-
tions to clubs, organizations
and classes.
“People join the pro-
gram because they love
gardening and the quest for
knowledge”, said Seifert.
“They remain Master
Gardeners for the friendship
in sharing that knowledge
with the community.”

Prayers Needed
Prayers are needed for Father George Carlin, who was
taken to the hospital Sunday, July 10. He is facing surgery
and amputation of his leg later this week due to an infec-
tion. He has requested prayers from his Harper friends
and former parishners.
St. Anthony Catholic Church
We extend a warm welcome to newcomers and visitors to St.
Anthony Catholic Church. Our parishioners plan and partici-
pate in a wide range of Christian service and outreach pro-
grams. You will find that there is something here at St.
Anthony’s for everyone. All of our programs are exciting and
faith-filled. We offer religious education classes and bible study
groups. We provide faith formation opportunities for everyone
in your family, with no obligation to join our parish. But you
do not have to attend a class to get answers to any questions
you may have. For example, why do we pray the rosary?
Where did the Bible come from? Why do we pray to saints?
Why do we honor Mary? Just call the office at (830) 864-4026
to speak with our secretary, Beth Lang, or leave a message, and
she will set up an appointment for you to speak to Father Mike
Peinemann or Deacon Curtis Klein one on one. You will be
able to learn about our Catholic faith and grow spiritually in
your own faith journey as you come to know us. We hope you
can join one of our many ministries and faith formation oppor-
tunities, and look forward to serving
your spiritual needs.

A Prayer for Rain
Almighty God, we are in need of rain. We realize now, look-
ing up into the clear, blue sky above, what a marvel even the least
drop of rain really is. To think that so much water can fall out of
the sky, which now is empty and clear! We place our trust in You.
We are sure that You know our needs. But You want us to ask You
anyway, to show You that we know we are dependent on You.
Look on our dry hills and fields, dear God, and bless them with the
living blessing of soft rain. Then the land will rejoice, and the
rivers will sing your praises, and the hearts of men will be made
glad. Amen.
(Editor’s note: This prayer was submitted by Patrick Lange and
is believed to have been written by Father A. A. Gitter during the
drought in the ‘50s.)
