Another new business in
Harper this year! Debbie
Nigh has opened Rags 2
Rhinestones in the gray
building next to the bank.
Half of the space is occu-
pied with Debbie’s hair
styling service. She does
hair cuts and coloring for
men, women and children; it
is a full service salon.
Debbie has been a hair styl-
ist for fifteen years. Call
830.285.6469 for an appoint-
ment.
The second part of the
shop is a retail space. It is
filled with jewelry and
clothing. The necklaces and
earrings are handcrafted by
Debbie. Debbie also carries
t-shirts, jeans, blouses and
handbags. She has outfits
for little girls. All are color-
ful and trendy.
The store is open on
Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. She is
open from 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. except on
Thursday, when she is
open until 6:00 p.m.
In addition to cash
and checks, she also
accepts MasterCard
and Visa.

husband have been
married for thirteen
years and have
seven kids and three
grandchildren
between them. A
fourth grandchild is
expected in April.
Stop by to enter a

Once again, the Harper
PTO Book Fair was a big suc-
cess. The PTO earned a total
profit of over $1700.00 and
the school’s libraries were
able to purchase over
$1000.00 in books. On
Wednesday night of the
three-day Book Fair, the
Family Fun Night was held
for the second year and was
a huge hit with the more
that 150 parents and stu-
dents turning out for the
event. The PTO offered a
Free Banana Split Bar and
served around 170 banana
splits to a multitude of hun-
gry participants.
On December 11, Harper
ISD will be hosting the
Elementary School UIL con-
test. There will be an early
release at 12:00, and over
200 students from Comfort,
Blanco and Harper will be
competing in a variety of
academic activities. The PTO
will be offering snacks of all
sort for the kids throughout
the day in the high school
cafeteria.
If you would like to vol-
unteer to help in the cafe-
teria, or if you can bake
chocolate chip cookies,
sugar cookies, or rice
krispie treats for this event,
please contact Carolyn
Lester (carolynj@ktc.com).
If you have kids, the PTO
will be offering a compli-
mentary baby sitting service
for all parents who let us
know in advance and come
to volunteer.
The PTO is gearing up for
the Third Annual Harper
Walk-A-Thon and the first
information packet has been
sent home. Included is entry
logo contest. All students
are encouraged to put forth
their best artistic effort and
submit their drawing to the
school by Dec. 3,2008. You
could be famous! Also
included in the packet is
general information about
the HWAT and a sponsorship
form for various types of
donations. We encourage
everyone to help make this
Walk-A-Thon bigger and
better than the last one.
To help fund our planned
playground improvements,
the PTO has launched the
Pocket Change for the
Playground money raiser. If
you have any loose change
eating a hole in your pocket,
send it to school with your
kids and look for the five
gallon water containers at
the elementary and high
school offices to put all
those cumbersome coins
into.
SPECIAL THANKS! The
Harper PTO would like to
thank all the parents who
have sent in Boxtops for
Education, Campbell’s Soup,
and Nestis’s Water labels.
Janelle Peralt has gathered,
sorted and sent these labels
back to the companies in
exchange for cash. So far,
the PTO should receive
$300.00 through these free
money programs. We
appreciate everyone taking
the time to dip and save
labels. Keep them coming
in...as you can see, they
really add up.
The next PTO meeting will
be December 4th, at 3:30 in
the High School Library.
Everyone is welcome.
Harper Elects
Five School Board Trustees
Harper has elected five
new trustees for the Harper
ISD school board.
Incumbents Juanice
Grona and Bartley Parker
were returned to their seats
for the next four years.
Joining them is local busi-
ness man, Morris Harper.
Winning the two year
seats were Cherry Wright, a
resident of Tierra Linda and
retired educator, and Bob
Reeves who has been very
active in the school, helping
with stock shows and 4-H
projects. They join Annie
Rendon and Ken Edwards
who will also face reelection
in 2010.
As Harper ISD continues to
grow, all the trustees have a
difficult job to complete.
They will make the decisions
that lead the district, hope-
fully to continued excel-
lence.
Retiring after several
years of service are board
president, Bob Kee, vice
president, Fred Schmidt, and
George Lee. The community
thanks them for their years
of service.
The school board regular-
ly meets on the third
Monday of each month in
the board room at 7:00 p.m.
The public is welcome to
attend.
(Editor’s note: As critical
issues come before both the
state and national govern-
ments, I have decided to
devote a little of the paper’s
space to contact information
for our elected officials. The
closer we as citizens stay in
contact, the better our officials
can act to protect our inter-
ests.)
