14th PORSCHE PARADE
The Parade did not start until Tuesday, the 24th, so I drove to
renew my friendship with the largest Porsche (no VW's) dealer I believe
exists - Vasek Polak - in Redondo Beach. I got some very interesting
new information on the '70 cars. The new 914 and 916 will have only
the engines different. The 914 will have the VW 411 engine, possibly
with electronic fuel injection while the 916 will be basically a 911T.
Both will have the new body by Karman. The 912 will almost certainly
be dropped.
Vasek has the most fantastic shop a Porsche owner has ever seen,
There are complete shop manuals and special Porsche tools in stock
for sale at rather reasonable prices.
Tuesday I was very surprised, People came out of the woodwork
everywhere to show cars at the Concours which was held at the closest
high school with a beautiful grassy display area, You would not believe
some of the modifications some of these people put on their cars!
There was one 911 with 13" wheels and 10" wide racing tires.
Wednesday the Rally was beautifully prepared and checked by Wally
and Bea Cole from San Diego. The route was beautiful, but it is not
nearly as interesting at 5:00 A.M. as at the regular time. I was asked
to run advance car with Wally (when he was president of S.D. Region, I
was secretary) so I got a little advance everything on the rally except
sleep (4 hrs,), Everyone appeared to enjoy the event, but it was a
little too long.
Thursday was driver's school, Autocross and Fun Gymkhana. We (Lou
Marble, the San Francisco Distributor Tech, Reps, and I) made the tour
of events and then toured Cunningham's Auto Museum and had a personal
tour by the Museum Director, Mr. John Burgess, who started and ran some
custom Dusenbergs, Mercedes ss, a 1917 Cunningham V8 (no relation) and
a 6 cyl. MG.
Friday, the executive council and board of directors meeting con-
sisted of a report from the bylaws committee which proposed several
changes which they will submit to members in the near future. Some of
these proposals were:
1. New member initiation fee of 310
2. Election of President and Vice President only by national vote,
the other officers then being appointed
3. The zone coordinators be elected by their zone and become
executive council members.
Several of the zone coordinators stated that they felt the zone
coordinating system is creating better understanding and coordination
between their regions and the national organization.
Saturday was the last day and consisted of a tech, session and the
victory banquet. The morning tech, session was the technical quiz
which this year was in 4 parts - Ladies and Mens 356 and 900 series.
In the afternoon PCA representatives conducted their annual question
and answer session plus an introductory talk by Mr. Kurt Meyer, southern
west coast region POAC representative, Mr, Folker Rieffling, northern
west coast representative, and Mr. Wolf Rietal, the U.S. POAC service
representative. The session was a bit disappointing because the answers
on many of these from POAC did not appear to match owners experiences
on the various problems discussed.
