Inspirations
By Frances Durisseau
Writers though the ages have put pen to paper
in hopes of defining love. Many of them have
composed beautiful works of prose that we've
read at different times in our lives, from weddings
to English Literature class. From the works of
Khalil Gibran to William Shakespeare, many words
of love have spoken to our hearts and helped to
described the feelings that capture us when we
allow the emotion and feelings of love to capture
our hearts. For me personally, those words are
nice, but they can't come close to explaining what
I feel for the people I love. Nor, as a person who
dabbles at writing, can-Fcome close to finding
words that will encompass the smallest portion
of what lies in my heart. Today, I am speaking
of love because, once again, my husband is con-
tinuing a tough battle with his health. In fact, it
has gotten tougher, it appears. We are waiting to
hear when they will have his hospital room ready
for his admittance. Whatever he (and we) may
be facing, we will face it with courage and deter-
mination that is born from a love that knows no
boundaries. We have and will continue to keep
each other inspired inTITTs life, but I would like to
ask for your thoughts, prayers and encourage-
ments as well. We are two, and we are strong
together. Yet, as a united and strong community,
Michael will not just win a few battles that have
cropped up. We are confident, with the love and
support of those who care about him, (and we
know that there are many of you, and we would
love to hear from you) we know that he will win
the the war. --

ctober is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month
Sharon, a 47 year old mother in League City, has dealt with an aggressive form of breast can-
cer, and come out on the other side. She says her inner strength to beat this disease is her
10-year-old son, Nathan, who as Aspergers. "I feel sheer will when I look at him," she says.
"God wouldn't have given me him if I'm not meant to be here for the long haul." Sharon is on
her second round of chemo, and then she'll have her surgery. Remember those, this month,
that are still here and doing well, and those that are not, due to breast cancer.
Flu shots in order
for almost everyone
GALVESTON - The Galveston County Health District
is reminding everyone that the old saying about an ounce of
prevention being worth a pound of cure is especially true when
it comes to influenza. The “ounce of prevention” is a flu shot
which is the best way to prevent the flu.
“Do not wait. Get your seasonal flu vaccination now,” said
Randy Valcin, GCHD Epidemiologist. “It is one of the best
ways to protect yourself and others from seasonal flu.”
Influenza is not just a winter inconvenience, but a contagious
respiratory illness. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at
times can lead to complications, hospitalization, and even
death.
The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
advises that everyone six months of age and older get the shot,
which becomes effective against several strains of influenza
about two weeks after inoculation. It is especially important for
some people to get vaccinated:
All children 6 months of age to 4 years;
People 50 years and older;
Adults and children who have chronic pulmonary (including
asthma), cardiovascular, kidney, liver, neurological or metabolic
disorders (including diabetes);
People with compromised immune systems;
Women who are or will be pregnant during the flu season;
Children 6 months to 18 years who are receiving long-term
aspirin therapy;
Residents of long-term care facilities;
People who are morbidly obese;
Household contacts and caregivers of children less than 5,
and adults age 50 and above.
GCHD will host public flu shot clinics at the following loca-
tions on the dates and times listed:
October 8th, 11 a. m. — 12 noon, League City, Eastern
Regional Park, League City Community Center, 2105
Dickinson Avenue
October 10th, 11 a. m. — 12 noon, Dickinson, Community
Center, 2714 Highway 3
October 17th, 11 a. m. — 12 noon, Texas City, Nessler
Center, 2010 5th Avenue North
October 24th, 10 a. m. - 11 a. m., Friendswood, Activity
Center, 416 Morningside Drive
October 24th, 11:30 a. m. — 12:30 p. m., La Marque,
Carbide Park, Wayne Johnson Community Center, 4102 Main
Street (FM 519)
October 29th, 10 a. m. — 11 a. m., La Marque, McKinney
Memorial United Methodist Church, 1607 Nashby
For those unable to attend one of the community flu shot
clinics the Health District is also offering shots throughout the
flu season at their immunization clinics located in:
Galveston, 4700 Broadway; Monday 8 a.m. - 12 noon and 1
p. m. - 5 p. m.; Wednesday 10 a. m. - 2 p. m. and 3 p. m. - 7
p. m.
Texas City, 9850-B Emmett F. Lowry Expressway; Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 8 a.m. — 5 p.m.; Tuesday 8 a.
m. — 7 p. m.
Dickinson, 3411 Gulf Freeway; Tuesday, Thursday & Friday,
8 a. m. - 12 noon and 1 p. m. — 5 p. m.
Flu shots are $20 each, and staff will accept Medicare cards
for reimbursement and also Blue Cross Blue Shield.
“County residents can help reduce the spread of seasonal flu
by continuing to practice good hygiene habits,” said Valcin.
“You need to be sure to wash hands thoroughly and frequently
to protect yourself from germs and cover your nose and mouth
with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze. If soap and
water are not available for hand washing we recommend using a
hand sanitizer.”
A complete detailed list of who should get vaccinated is
available on the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/
whoshouldvax.htm. For additional information on GCHD’s
immunization services visit their website at www.gchd.org/chn/
