A SPOOK
What It If and What It Ik Xot Some Which
HflVtt BottU Sfl H
The London Saturday Review ha ing
published an article on Spookical lie
search has been bes iged by corres
pondents desirous of Knowing what a
spook is and it answers
lnilologically of course there is no
difficulty about the matter The Greek
word Psyche is familiar to many people
who do not know Gr ek and the inge-
nious theory has been put forward that
the Germans thought well to
adopt it into their language and
halng a wellgrounded dislike to a word
beginning with ps they simply transposed
the consonants Moreover they slightly
3peciali7rt the meaning as cons antly
happens when a word is Borrowed by ote
Z3aguage rom another
Thus Psyche ioul or spirit became
Spuk pint apparition or ghost Fin
ally the inhabitants ol tne Wettern states
of America iu order to prove the cosmo
politan libtrality which is one of their
proudest boa9ts learned the word from
their German fellowciilzens and again
slightly altered the spelling in or
der to preserve the sound so that Spook
the daughter of Spuk and granddaughter
or PsjcDe became and was and still is
a nc iniz > d word wherever the Kngluh
languige is poken and the nnrmal and
orthodox generic word for ghosts and
things ghostly throughout a great part of
the American continent
The interrogation what is a spook
requires for its full and proper answer a
declaration as to wnat a spook is That
as already indicated will probably
not bo siven within n mpasurable
time But some information on
the subj ct stating affirmatively
what is a spook is avtdabie for all and
can perhaps 13 set forth with peculiar
ud van case by those who have watched
with kindly interes the recent outburst
of spookcal activity Suppose then
to begiu with a simple instance
that you ste somebody who i nt
there What you see is a spook The
person whom you see where he isnt may
be dead or alive and may be in the next
room or on the other bide of the world
but whit you see is a spook all the same
Nor does it matter how he came He
may be a stranger in Eastern attire and
may begiu to twaddle about planes che
las curus adepts and higher selves
ami ofier to materialize some article of
tnllms pecuniary value In that case
he is the astral principle of
somebody probably a Mahatnu whose
bodily piicciple which means his body
is lying motionless in a trance at some
distant spor But he is still a spook Or
asain he may lie tomebody whom you
know perfectly will and to whom you owe
money and who is at that very
moment haius his thrwat cut
in n cannibal island lie is a sOk too
The one is occult the ether ii licpatcd
but for practical purposes thTC is no dif-
ference between them The apparition ol
a person who has been dead for some-
time is equally a spook
It is common knowledge that a great
many spooks invert the proverbial duty
of little girls and are heard and not seen
Information derived irom spookical re-
search shuws clearly that they are
sometimes felt suggests that they
have been smelt and leads the pro-
fessors of that branch of learning to ex-
press a guarded hope that some day they
may be tasted The invisible audi-
ble spook presents some diffi-
culties of his own in the way
of dellnltion A man hears o sound
which Is not made e g the sound of
human song where nc human larnyx is
sinking Does he hear a sound being
made by a spook or is the sound he hears
itsef a spook The question is one of
spookeful research
For the laymen it is enough to know that
in either case the 1 stener may accur-
ately and according to the common use
of language be said to her a spook
Dogs csriiages balls of fire mus-
ical chords drum beats and raps on
the furniture may also be spooks It
is hard to recognizs a rap as a spook be-
cause so many thousands of raps are not
spooks at all but are produced in the or-
dinary way by rnechsncal appliances Still
It is p robab ethat some sort of rap espec
lally on windows at the dead of night
may be spooks Bnt of course a sheet
and turnip or a smudge of phosphorus
on the wail are not spooks Whatever
else your spook is or is not be must be
genuine
