Chrism Mass
celebrated at
Cathedral April 10
All are invited to
the Holy yVeek
celebration of the
Chrism Mass in
Corpus Christi
Cathedral at 7
p.ni.Tuesday April
10.
Bishop Edmond
Carmody will
preside at the
Mass, which is one
of the principal
expressions of the
fullness of the
bishop's priesthood and signifies the dose unity
of his priests with him.
Priests of the diocese are invited to a time of
reflection with the bishop at 4 p.m, in the
cathedrals Emmanuel Chapel followed by a
dinner at 5:30 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Hall. The
members of the presbyterate will then recommit
themselves to their vocation at the liturgical
celebration.
During the Mass, the bishop will consecrate the
chrism and bless the oils of the catechumen and
the sick, which will then be distributed to the
priests to be used in their parishes throughout
ihe year.
The Christian liturgy has assimilated this Old
Testament usage of anointing kings, priests and
prophets with consecratory oil because the name
of Christ, whom they prefigured, means “The
anointed of the Lord."
Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam,
which adds a sweet odor and physically differen-
tiates it from the other oils. The chrism is conse-
crated by the bishop and used for anointings in
baptisms, confirmations, ordinations and the
blessing of an altar.
The oil of catechumens is blessed by the bishop
and is used at the baptism of catechumen and is
poured into the baptismal water blessed at the
Easter Vigil.
The oil of the sick is blessed by the bishop and
used in anointing the sick.
