Advice to new graduates: Ten good things to know...
By Georgina Stark

Graduating from high school
is a big step, but if you put your
head down and worked hard, you
breezed through it, coming out the
other end with your graduation
certificate in hand. What is much
harder of course, is deciding what
you’re going to do after that.
Through high school you’re
guided, nudged, shoved in the right direction by teachers
and parents, with classes you have to attend, homework
you have to do and exams you have to pass.
But what are you going to do when you’re on your own
and you don’t have teachers telling you where to be and
when? What to do next and all the decisions you make
are your own, so they’d better be the right ones.
That’s really the hardest part and will affect the course
your life takes probably more than the GPA you strived to
keep up.
So here are 10 things every graduate should know be-
fore going out into the big, wide world:
1. You can’t please everyone, all of the time. Know this
now, be true to yourself and you’ll be okay
2. Make sure your decisions are the right ones for you
and not based on what your friends are doing - you’re the
one that has to live out your life based on those decisions.
Don’t go to a certain college because your best friend is
going there or study what they’re studying, or worse, not
go at all because none of your friends are.
3. Listen to the advice adults have for you. They have
been there, done that and can give you good advice from
experience. Hindsight is a marvelous asset that only
comes with age and experience.
4. There really is no such thing as a free lunch. Wheth-
er you go off to college or get a job, hard work is going to
be the thing that gets you where you want to be. This is
one of the toughest realizations!
5. The Serenity Prayer is also good advice; “God grant
me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the
courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to
know the difference.” You can’t change the world but you
can try to make it a better place to live in.
6. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. It’s okay to
make mistakes and it’s even better to learn from them. But
don’t give up - the real value is not in how you fall but
how you pick yourself back up and try again.
7. Take care of yourself. College environments in par-
ticular lend themselves to many temptations, from drugs,
alcohol and sex to too much junk food and not enough
sleep. You only get one body, one heart and one soul and
they all have to last you a lifetime. Look after them by
making the right choices.
8. Try to have a plan. It’s okay not to know precisely
what you want to be doing, but have a rough idea of a ca-
reer you would enjoy and how you’ll go about acheiving
it. Set goals and strive to meet them....if it’s your dream,
don’t let anyone tell you you’ll never get there. Anything’s
possible with hard work and dedication.
9. The real value in any work is not how much you get
paid for doing it, but how much you enjoy it, how much
satisfaction it gives you and how it benefits the world
around you. Getting paid more for a job you dread go-
ing to, doesn’t make the job more interesting or fun. It’s
far better to have less money in the bank and a career
you really enjoy
10. Experiencing another culture that doesn’t speak
your language, take your currency or serve food like
your mom makes is one of the best educations you
can give yourself. You’ll learn a whole new way of life,
broaden your horizons, make new friends, maybe learn
a new language and look at your own life in a new light.
STC wishes the best of luck to all new graduates!
