About 150 residents are
giving the city of Portland a
hard time
And they also are making life
hectic for CPU and United Gas.
The problem Is meter

Now really......
It would surely seem that
any resident would cooperate
with the city and utility
companies in allowing a reader
access to the meters they have
to read
There have been actual cases

chairman of the board of the
Du Pont Company, for the
company having a greater
capital investment in Texas
than in any other state
His remarks were made at a
formal dedication of the Du
Pont Corpus Christi plant at
Ingleside The company an
nounced at the dedication
ceremony that Du Pont plans
to expand the Ingleside facility
over the next five years
The plant, which will employ
about 300 persons by the end of
this year, has manufacturing
facilities for carbon
tetrachloride, an intermediate
for Freon The facility will
supply plants producing Freon
at other locations for the next
year The first unit at Ingleside
is scheduled to begin operation
in late 1974, to be followed by
other manufacturing units for
different types of fluorocar-
bons
Plans are to add a chlorine-
caustic soda plant. Currently in
the design stage, the new unit
would make the site self-
sufficient in chlorine
Chlorine is used in the
manufacture of Freon
fluorocarbon products, widely
used as propellants in aerosol
cans, as agents for making
foam plastics and as cleaning
agents for a variety of ap-
plications. The major use is as
the cooling agent in
refrigerators and air con
ditioning units
In speaking about the
reasons for Du Pont coming to
Texas, McCoy said, “We have
been most impressed by the

"Second, the state of Texas
and its communities have
made it attractive for in-
dustries to locate here Tax
policies and other provisions
have been a definite incentive
"The third factor is the
availability of raw materials.
Freon begins with methane
which is taken from natural
gas Hence the choice of a plant

petroleum fields of the South-
west"
Commenting on the current
shortages of natural gas and
oil, McCoy said, “The fact that
we are putting a major new
petrochemical plant here, and
talking about expanding it. is a
sign of our confidence that
petroleum suppliers will be
able to continue meeting our
raw material needs

PAC Members Hear
‘Store Front’ Proposal
Two members of the drug
abuse program In Corpus
Christi made an appeal Mon-
day night to the Portland As-
sociation of Congregations for
support In establishment of a
“store front*’ facility here.
Meeting at the St. Stephen
Lutheran Church with Rev.
George Monroe as host, the
PAC heard Mrs. Crlstlne Mea-
dows, assistant executive dir-
ector, Corpus Christi Drug Ab-
use Council, and Matt Miser,
Out Reach coordinator, explain
that In concept a store front
facility la a place where anyone
needing any type of assistance
may “drop In” for a sympa-
thetic ear and for counseling.
However, the primary pur-
pose of such facilities Is to
assist the drug user or the po-
tential drug user.
Currently, there are three
such store fronts in operation
In the Corpus Christi area —
two In Corpus Christi, one In
the Chicano district and another
In the Black district, and one In
Robstown. Miser said that one
Is now in the process of being
established at Ingleside.
The three established centers
had 186 people take advantage
of the program in July and 436
came In August. They began
operation In May. Of the 436
people who were assisted In
August, 87 had a drug problem,
Miser said. Facilities are open
from 12 noon until 10 p.m.
Providing information and In-
struction on where to obtain ad-
ditional particulars pertaining
to almost any personal pro-
blem are envisioned as pri-
mary efforts for a store front
In Portland, Miser said.
Problems In drugs, employ-
ment and family affairs were
some areas mentioned by Miser
which probably would be pre-
sented to store front personnel.
Store fronts here would be
staffed by volunteers, with a
back up of trained counselors'
from the Corpus Christi pro-
gram available at all times.
